Tony Wang11 min readThe World Cup Final Boo: How It Spread Across Reddit and TikTok, Hour by Hour
Real Reddit and TikTok timestamps show the World Cup final crowd boo spread across 14 subreddits and dozens of accounts within hours — a live case study.
Spain beat Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium on July 19. During the post-match trophy ceremony, the crowd booed President Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino as they walked onto the pitch — a moment our companion piece already showed was big enough to crack the top 10 of US Google Trends. This piece asks the follow-up question a search-trends snapshot can't answer on its own: how fast, and where, did the moment actually spread across social platforms? We pulled the real Reddit posts and TikTok videos — with real timestamps and engagement numbers — as a case study in what a PR, brand-safety, or crisis-monitoring team would need to catch a live moment like this as it happens, not in next-day recap.
Two boos, not one
Google's trending-searches list (used in our companion piece) shows that the topic trended. Its interest-over-time endpoint, queried hour by hour, shows when:
| Hour (UTC) | "trump infantino" | "world cup boo" |
|---|---|---|
| Jul 19, 5pm | 7 | 0 |
| Jul 19, 6pm | 7 | 9 |
| Jul 19, 7pm | 18 | 27 |
| Jul 19, 8pm | 11 | 22 |
| Jul 19, 9pm | 17 | 20 |
| Jul 19, 10pm | 100 | 45 |
| Jul 19, 11pm | 28 | 34 |
| Jul 20, 12am | 22 | 25 |
| Jul 20, 1am | 18 | 47 |
| Jul 20, 2am | 21 | 42 |
| Jul 20, 3am | 16 | 38 |
| Jul 20, 4am | 21 | 31 |
| Jul 20, 5am | 18 | 30 |
| Jul 20, 6am | 19 | 26 |
Kickoff was 3pm EDT — 7pm UTC — right after the national anthem, matching the first small bump. The much bigger jump at 10pm UTC is "trump infantino"'s peak value for the entire seven-day window, landing squarely on the post-match trophy ceremony. "World cup boo" follows a broader, later-peaking shape and stays elevated well into the next morning. Two separate spikes, not one long tail, consistent with two distinct on-camera moments rather than a single event slowly spreading.
Reddit's spread: 14 subreddits, four hours
A targeted keyword search — not the unfiltered top-of-day feed our companion piece used — surfaces the story's actual path across Reddit. Between the first post we found and the last, it reached at least 14 distinct subreddits:
| Time (UTC) | Subreddit | Post title |
|---|---|---|
| 19:07 | r/USNEWS | Trump booed at World Cup final seconds after national anthem |
| 19:50 | r/2westerneurope4u | ZDF (German national TV) commentator roasts Trump & Infantino |

| 23:17 | r/politics | Trump booed after presenting Spain with World Cup and joining trophy lift |
| 23:20 | r/facepalm | Trump in attendance and booed during the FIFA World Cup final |
General-interest and entertainment subreddits (r/facepalm, r/Fauxmoi, r/WhitePeopleTwitter) picked the story up alongside sports subs (r/sports, r/soccer, r/sportsgossips) and explicitly political ones (r/politics, r/ProgressiveHQ, r/NewsThread, r/NewsSource) — it crossed community boundaries inside its first hour. The second, larger cluster of posts — including the r/sports thread naming the trophy ceremony directly — lands between 22:27 and 23:20 UTC, a 53-minute window that lines up with the post-match spike Google Trends also shows.
TikTok's spread: fewer creators, bigger numbers
TikTok's search and hashtag endpoints return a relevance ranking for a keyword at query time, not a chronological feed the way Reddit's search does — so treat "first" and "last" loosely. Sorting the videos we could pull by their own creation timestamps still tells a clear story:
| Time (UTC) | Account | Account type | Plays | Likes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jul 19, 20:46 | @mranthonypolanco | Independent creator | 23,100 | 782 |

| Jul 20, 02:42 | @elizaorlins | Independent creator/commentator | 43,400 | 4,476 |
| Jul 20, 05:58 | @totalpolitik | News outlet (Indonesia) | 4,492 | 100 |
Combined, these 33 unique videos drew 4.84 million views — but the single video from political-commentary account @democrats accounts for 2.8 million of them, 58% of the total. The next-largest, @headquarters' 1-million-view clip, posted earliest (20:54 UTC) and sits closer to the pre-match anthem moment than the ceremony. News outlets (Newsweek, The News Movement, Australia's The Australian, Indonesia's @totalpolitik) and a political-organization account both picked up the story — TikTok's spread crossed language and time-zone lines that Reddit's mostly-US subreddits didn't, with a new video still landing almost nine hours after the final whistle, in Jakarta's morning.
A dedicated hashtag, #trumpbooed, existed by the time we pulled: 282 videos totaling roughly 1.98 million views, a number specific to this incident. For comparison, the long-running #infantino hashtag reports 1.5 billion lifetime views across 39,531 videos — a total built up over years of FIFA-president content, not a measure of this one night. When checking hashtag reach for a live moment, a freshly-minted or newly-spiking hashtag name is a far more honest signal than an established hashtag's all-time total.
What's measurable, and what isn't
Reddit and TikTok don't return the same kind of number, and forcing them onto one "virality score" would manufacture a false precision:
- Reddit's search, post, and comment endpoints return real post titles, subreddits, authors, and creation timestamps — reliable for where and when a story spread. The data we pulled did not include upvote/score or comment-count totals, so we can say which subreddits carried the story and how fast, not which individual post was "biggest."
- TikTok's search and hashtag endpoints return real per-video view, like, comment, and share counts — reliable for magnitude. But identical queries run minutes apart returned overlapping, not identical, result sets (a handful of videos appeared in one pull and not the other) — it's TikTok's own relevance ranking deciding what a query surfaces, not a stable feed, so any single pull is a sample, not a census.
- Hashtag totals are lifetime cumulative figures, not day-specific — a big number on an old, generic hashtag says little about a single night; a small number on a hashtag minted for the incident says more.
- Google Trends values are a relative index (0-100) within the specific keywords and time window queried, not an absolute search count — comparable hour to hour inside this pull, not against some other query's numbers.
None of this is a reason to skip a platform. It's a reason to read each one for what it actually measures, and to say so plainly in whatever report reaches a PR or brand-safety team.
What this means for real-time monitoring
Nothing above came from watching TV or refreshing an app by hand — it came from four programmatic calls: a Reddit keyword search, a Reddit post/comment lookup, a TikTok keyword and hashtag search, and a Google Trends interest-over-time query. That's the actual shape of a real-time social-listening setup for a team watching a live event unfold:
- Poll more than one platform in parallel. The same live moment reached Reddit and TikTok within single-digit minutes of each other, independently. A setup that only watches one platform — or only waits on news alerts — will structurally lag both.
- Watch for concentration, not just volume. A 4.84-million-view total sounds like broad virality; 58% of it came from one account. An alert tuned only to aggregate mention counts can miss that the real story is a single high-reach poster, not a groundswell — and that one account going quiet, deleting, or issuing a correction can change the trajectory more than a hundred small posts would.
- Prefer fresh, incident-specific queries and hashtags over broad ones. A generic tag's lifetime total drowns out a one-night spike; a query built around the specific incident (names, venue, action) surfaces the real signal.
- Track the interest curve after the burst, not just during it. Reddit and TikTok posting is heaviest in the first few hours; Google Trends interest for both queries here was still elevated eight-plus hours later — useful for judging whether a moment is still worth a statement, a follow-up, or nothing at all.

Frequently asked questions
How fast did the World Cup final trophy-ceremony boo spread across Reddit and TikTok?
Within minutes. A r/sports thread describing the trophy-ceremony boo went up at 22:35 UTC on July 19, 2026; an independent TikTok video referencing the same moment (@giogarciala, 377,900 plays) was already posted four minutes later, at 22:39 UTC. Neither platform needed the other — both are separate, near-simultaneous reactions to the same live broadcast.
Was there one boo, or more than one, during the World Cup final?
At least two distinct moments. Reddit posts and Google Trends data both show an early spike around 19:00 UTC, right after the pre-match national anthem, and a much larger one around 22:00 UTC — Google Trends' peak value for the week for the query 'trump infantino' — matching the post-match trophy ceremony.
Did the story go viral evenly across TikTok?
No — it was concentrated. Of 4.84 million combined views across the 33 unique TikTok videos in our sample, one video from the account @democrats accounted for 2.8 million of them (58%). A handful of high-reach accounts, not broad organic spread, drove most of the volume.
Can Reddit and TikTok data be compared on the same 'virality' scale?
Not directly. Reddit's public search and post endpoints return real titles, subreddits, and timestamps but no upvote or comment-count totals in the data we pulled; TikTok's search and hashtag endpoints return real view/like/comment/share counts, but identical queries run minutes apart return overlapping, not identical, result sets, and hashtag totals are lifetime cumulative figures, not day-specific. Track each platform for what it actually measures rather than forcing one virality number.
