Data study · July 20, 2026
We analyzed 75,989,482 business listings on Google Maps worldwide. 54.2%have no website at all — and the single most common “website” among the rest is a Facebook page, not an independent site.

Google Maps listings worldwide — snapshot July 20, 2026.
54.2%
of the 75,989,482 listings have no website at all (41,219,621) — a phone number is the only way to reach them.
169,025
businesses use a Facebook page as their “website”— the single most common “site” in the entire dataset.
70.8%
of Canadian businesses are online — the highest of the six markets we track, well above the 45.8% global average.
75.6→23.3%
coverage runs from banks at the top to farms at the bottom — industry decides it.
Every listing, by website presence
Website coverage on the same kind of Google Maps listing varies enormously by market. Canada (70.8%) and Germany (67.6%) lead the US (61%), Japan (57%), and UK (56%) — all five comfortably above the 45.8% global average. China (5%) is the outlier: far below every other tracked market and the global average alike, for reasons a companion study traces to Google Business Profile not being supported there at all. This is a six-market comparison, not the full picture.

1,579,165 listings
4,354,444 listings
4,912,075 listings
7,367,951 listings
From banks (75.6%) down to farms (23.3%), website coverage tracks how much a business depends on online discovery. Hands-on local trades sit lowest; regulated and franchise-heavy categories sit highest.
Having a "website" in the data rarely means an independent site. 169,025 listings point to a Facebook page; 130,509 carry a Yext chain-listing fingerprint; and the top domains are postal locators and franchise corporate sites shared across thousands of branches.
Most common “websites” — by listings sharing them
What a “website” field actually is
Independent site on its own domain
The real local web — a small business with its own homepage. The long tail, in the millions.
Chain / franchise branch
One corporate locator domain shared across thousands of branches (locations.ups.com/store/123). One brand, not one site each.
Social page as a website
A Facebook or Instagram page stands in for a site — the single most common “website” in the data (169k+ businesses).
Free site builder
A templated sites.google.com / wixsite.com / weebly.com page — crawlable, but not a real domain of their own.
No website at all
54% of listings — a phone number is the only contact channel. Web enrichment can't touch them.
Website presence is one signal. Reviews and ratings are another — and a companion study on the US slice of this same dataset finds most listings are missing that signal too.
10.1%
of US Google Business Profile listings have never been reviewed — not low-rated, zero reviews.
8.4%
combine a 4.5★+ rating with 50+ reviews — the bar local-SEO research ties to a materially better local-pack ranking.
The same figures behind the charts — plain HTML tables, easy to copy and machine-readable for search engines and AI answer engines that can't parse a chart.

We aggregated Crawlora’s Google Maps businesses dataset — a point-in-time snapshot of 75,989,482 listings probed up to July 20, 2026. A business “has a website” if its Google Maps listing carries a non-empty website field; coverage is the share of listings that do. Country and category come from the listing itself.
Scope. The headline 54.2% and the by-category breakdown are computed across the full, now-worldwide dataset. The country comparison is a six-market sample (US, UK, Canada, Germany, Japan, China), not an exhaustive breakdown — those six markets make up roughly 55% of the current dataset. Places, not just shops. Google Maps also lists non-business points of interest (postal codes, bus stops, parks, ATMs); the headline 54.2% covers all listings, while the by-category view is filtered to real business categories. Counts for shared domains are from a registrable-domain analysis run on an earlier, smaller-scale pass (2026-06-10) and are approximate — they have not been recomputed at the current scale. Figures are a lower bound on “independent web presence”: a listed “website” is often a Facebook page, a chain locator, or a free site builder.

Crawlora (2026). State of Local Business on the Web 2026. 54.2% of 75,989,482 Google Maps listings worldwide have no website. https://crawlora.net/local-business-index.
Across 75,989,482 Google Maps business listings worldwide, 54.2% have no website at all (41,219,621 businesses) — a phone number is their only listed contact channel. Among businesses that do list a "website", many point to a Facebook page or a chain corporate domain rather than an independent site.
Farms and grocery stores are least likely, both around 23.3% online, followed by auto repair shops (32.6%), bakeries (34.3%) and doctors (34.9%). At the other end, 75.6% of banks, 68.6% of insurance agencies and 66.5% of pizza restaurants are online.
The US still beats the UK, but neither leads anymore: Canada is now the most-online of the six markets we track at 70.8%, ahead of Germany (67.6%), the US (61%), Japan (57%), the UK (56%), and China (5%, by far the lowest — see below) — a 5-point US–UK gap on the same kind of listing, down from our June 2026 pass.
For 169,025 businesses in our original domain-level analysis, a Facebook page is the only "website" they list — it is the single most common entry in the website field. It works as a presence, but it isn't a domain they own, can't be crawled like a homepage, and leaves them dependent on the platform. Counting social pages, chain locators and free site builders, the share of businesses on a real independent domain is well below the headline 45.8%.
It is a point-in-time snapshot of 75,989,482 Google Maps business listings worldwide, probed up to July 20, 2026, drawn from Crawlora's Google Maps businesses dataset. Website presence and category coverage are computed across the full global dataset; the country comparison covers six selected markets (US, UK, Canada, Germany, Japan, China), not every country. The Facebook/Yext/shared-domain figures are retained from an earlier, smaller-scale analysis pass (2026-06-10) and haven't been recomputed at the current scale. The aggregate rollups are published as an open CSV under CC BY 4.0.
54.2% of these businesses are phone-only and many of the rest hide behind a Facebook page or a chain locator. Crawlora’s Google Maps and Contact APIs find the independent sites among them and pull verified business emails — so you build a lead list of real, reachable local businesses, not chain switchboards.
