Google Maps listings, US/UK/Canada — snapshot June 10, 2026.
40%
of the 12,390,949 listings have no website at all (4,957,293) — a phone number is the only way to reach them.
169,025
businesses use a Facebook page as their “website”— the single most common “site” in the entire dataset.
66.2%
of US businesses are online vs just 50.2% in the UK — a 16-point transatlantic gap.
92.7→32.5%
coverage runs from banks at the top to farms at the bottom — industry decides it.
Every listing, by website presence
Website coverage on the same kind of Google Maps listing varies sharply by country — US businesses are ~16 points ahead of UK ones. The US, UK and Canada are 98% of the dataset.
7,003,047 listings
4,546,416 listings
605,699 listings
170,284 listings
From banks (92.7%) down to farms (32.5%), website coverage tracks how much a business depends on online discovery. Hands-on local trades sit lowest; regulated and franchise-heavy categories sit highest.
Having a "website" in the data rarely means an independent site. 169,025 listings point to a Facebook page; 130,509 carry a Yext chain-listing fingerprint; and the top domains are postal locators and franchise corporate sites shared across thousands of branches.
Most common “websites” — by listings sharing them
What a “website” field actually is
Independent site on its own domain
The real local web — a small business with its own homepage. The long tail, in the millions.
Chain / franchise branch
One corporate locator domain shared across thousands of branches (locations.ups.com/store/123). One brand, not one site each.
Social page as a website
A Facebook or Instagram page stands in for a site — the single most common “website” in the data (169k businesses).
Free site builder
A templated sites.google.com / wixsite.com / weebly.com page — crawlable, but not a real domain of their own.
No website at all
40% of listings — a phone number is the only contact channel. Web enrichment can't touch them.

We aggregated Crawlora’s Google Maps businesses dataset — a point-in-time snapshot of 12,390,949 listings probed up to June 10, 2026. A business “has a website” if its Google Maps listing carries a non-empty website field; coverage is the share of listings that do. Country and category come from the listing itself.
Scope. 98% of the listings are in the US, UK and Canada, so this is a study of those markets, not the whole web. Places, not just shops.Google Maps also lists non-business points of interest (postal codes, bus stops, parks, ATMs); the headline 40% covers all listings, while the by-category view is filtered to real business categories. Counts for shared domains are from a registrable-domain analysis and are approximate. Figures are a lower bound on “independent web presence”: a listed “website” is often a Facebook page, a chain locator, or a free site builder.

Crawlora (2026). State of Local Business on the Web 2026. 40% of 12,390,949 US/UK/Canada Google Maps listings have no website. https://crawlora.net/local-business-index.
Across 12,390,949 US, UK and Canada business listings on Google Maps, 40% have no website at all (4,957,293 businesses) — a phone number is their only listed contact channel. Among businesses that do list a "website", many point to a Facebook page or a chain corporate domain rather than an independent site.
Farms (32.5% online), doctors (35.8%), beauty salons (42.0%) and barber shops (43.7%) are the least likely to have a website. Auto repair shops, nail salons, plumbers and electricians all sit around 48–52%. At the other end, 92.7% of banks, 84.3% of insurance agencies and 79.2% of pharmacies are online.
US businesses are markedly more online: 66.2% of US Google Maps listings have a website versus 50.2% in the UK and 62.5% in Canada — a roughly 16-point US–UK gap on the same kind of listing.
For 169,025 businesses in this data, a Facebook page is the only "website" they list — it is the single most common entry in the website field. It works as a presence, but it isn't a domain they own, can't be crawled like a homepage, and leaves them dependent on the platform. Counting social pages, chain locators and free site builders, the share of businesses on a real independent domain is well below the headline 60%.
It is a point-in-time snapshot of 12,390,949 Google Maps business listings probed up to June 10, 2026, drawn from Crawlora's Google Maps businesses dataset. 98% of the listings are in the US, UK and Canada, so the study is scoped to those markets. The aggregate rollups are published as an open CSV under CC BY 4.0.
40% of these businesses are phone-only and many of the rest hide behind a Facebook page or a chain locator. Crawlora’s Google Maps and Contact APIs find the independent sites among them and pull verified business emails — so you build a lead list of real, reachable local businesses, not chain switchboards.
