Tony Wang18 min readEveryone Braced for a $2,000+ Foldable iPhone. Apple Said $1,999, and the Internet Still Split Three Ways
12 hours before Apple's keynote we pulled reaction to the leaks; five days after, we pulled it again. The price came in low. The fight moved to TikTok.
Five days ago, roughly 12 hours before Apple's keynote, we pulled the internet's reaction to a phone that didn't officially exist yet. Everything people were arguing about then was a leak: a rumored price above $2,000, a rumored name ("iPhone Ultra"), a rumored return of Touch ID, a rumored missing telephoto lens. Now the iPhone Duo is real, priced, and five weeks from shipping. So we ran the same pull again and lined the two up. Some of the leaks were right and some were wrong. The bigger change is where the argument went once the facts came out.
The scorecard: what the leaks said on September 9 vs what Apple shipped
Here's every pre-keynote claim from our first pull that we can now check against Apple's own spec sheet and store pages.
| Claim | What people expected (Sept 9) | What Apple announced | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting price | Above $2,000; analyst range $1,999-$2,499; r/iPhoneFold: "most reports" $2,099 | $1,999 (256GB) | Lower than the consensus |
| Top tier | Leaked ladders topped out around $2,500 for 2TB | $3,199 (2TB) | Higher than every leak |
| Name | "iPhone Ultra" or "iPhone Fold" | iPhone Duo | Wrong |
| Biometrics | Touch ID instead of Face ID, joked about as a step back | Touch ID in the side button | Right |
| Telephoto | Rumored to ship without one | 12MP optical-quality 2x telephoto | Wrong |
| Apple Pencil | Not in the leaks | Supports Apple Pencil (USB-C) | Surprise |
| Size and weight | Not a focus of the leaks | 254g, 11.3mm folded, 7.6" inner / 5.4" outer | 53g heavier than Galaxy Z Fold 8 (201g) |
The price row is the one worth pausing on. Our first post quoted an r/iPhoneFold commenter predicting the charm-pricing trick almost exactly ("Gotta keep that starting price under $2,000"), but that was one voice. The wider expectation, in both analyst notes and fan threads, was that the foldable would start above the line. It didn't. As one r/gadgets commenter put it: "A little pricy but honestly I expected it to cost more."
That didn't stop the jokes. Before the keynote, our most-liked price comment was a TikTok reply about a leaked $1,500 iPhone 18 Pro being "literally months rent" (15,752 likes). After it, the most-liked price joke we found is on Threads: "It's called the iPhone Duo because you have to get two jobs in order to afford it" (33,475 likes). The price came in lower than expected, and the top joke about it still drew roughly twice the likes.
Search: the real name replaced the rumored one overnight
Before the keynote, US search interest in "iphone ultra" more than doubled in a day, which was the headline chart of our first post. Put that same term on one scale with the name Apple actually chose, and the pre-keynote spike looks like a rounding error.
"iphone ultra" peaked at 8 on this scale, and "iphone fold" at 12. "iphone duo" went from nothing to 100 in a day. People searched the rumor while it was the only word they had, then dropped it as soon as Apple gave them the real one.
The more interesting comparison is the Duo against the phone it launched alongside.
In the US, the Duo out-searched the iPhone 18 Pro for three straight days. The lead flipped on September 12, the exact morning 18 Pro pre-orders opened (Apple moved them from the usual Friday to Saturday because September 11 fell on the 25th anniversary of the attacks). That makes sense: the Duo was the thing people wanted to look at, and the 18 Pro was the thing they could actually order that week.
One caution before anyone reuses this chart. When we ran the same comparison worldwide instead of US-only, the iPhone 18 Pro led on every day, including launch day. Much of the global Duo conversation was about pricing in markets like India, where "iphone 18 pro max price in india" was a breakout related query. If you only pulled one geography, you'd publish the opposite conclusion.
Mainstream Reddit: impressed, then back to the price
We pulled the top-sorted comments from four large general-audience launch threads: r/apple ("Apple unveils iPhone Duo," 8,240 points, 4,019 comments), r/iphone (8,238 points, 3,247 comments), r/technology (2,354 points) and r/gadgets (1,302 points). Then we hand-coded each top-level comment and weighted it by its upvotes. Three comments that weren't about the Duo (mostly pleas to bring back the iPhone mini) were dropped, leaving 43.
| Category | Comments | Upvotes | Share of upvote weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Praises the product | 13 | 15,329 | 33.4% |
| Jokes / neutral | 12 | 12,430 | 27.1% |
| Price complaint | 6 | 9,151 | 19.9% |
| Impressive, but won't buy | 5 | 7,068 | 15.4% |
| Other complaint | 7 | 1,953 | 4.3% |
The praise was specific. The fold animation, where the home screen blurs and re-forms as the phone opens, drew "The opening and closing transition tho" (2,096) and "That animation when opening and closing it" (1,732). The under-display inner camera got "The hidden camera. FINALLY." (681 on r/gadgets). Even the confirmation of ProMotion and MagSafe collected thousands of relieved upvotes.
But price complaints were only six comments and still carried nearly a fifth of the weight, because they were the single highest-voted comments in their threads: "iPhone Duo: That'll be duo-thousand dollars please" (4,647 on r/iphone) and "Might upgrade my iPhone 13 to 14 now" (2,248 on r/technology). The "other complaint" bucket, which covers left-handed ergonomics, side-button placement, and "an iPad mini chopped in half," barely registered by weight.
Then there's the group that doesn't fit neatly on either side. The top comment on r/apple, "going to LOVE playing with this thing for 5 minutes at an Apple Store and then never buying it" (4,488), r/technology's "This is the coolest Apple Product I won't buy" (918), and r/iphone's "Do I want it? no. Do I think it's awesome? yes." (481) all say the same thing: the product works for them, the price doesn't.
The Touch ID debate, which our first post caught as a joke about going backwards, has become a real split. r/technology's "It uses TouchID only - not FaceID. I think that's interesting" (1,628) drew replies like "Face ID makes me type my PIN at least ten times a day; Touch ID almost never failed." In r/iPhoneDuo, a would-be buyer called the missing Face ID "probably the bigger deal killer for me." Nobody is laughing at it anymore, but nobody agrees on it either.
The buyer subreddits: financing, not sticker shock
Move from the general subreddits to the communities built around the phone itself, and the tone changes completely. These are self-selected (people who joined r/iPhoneDuo before launch are not a random sample of anyone), so read this section as "what committed buyers are talking about," not as a demand forecast.
In r/iPhoneDuo's "Who's getting the iPhone Duo" thread, many top-level replies are some version of "Will be a day one purchase for me," "Definitely day one," or "Getting 2, his and hers," followed by the question of Star White or Night Sky. The price complaints from r/iphone barely show up. When cost comes up, it's reframed as a monthly number: "In America at least, people will just look at it as a $50/month payment, which isn't unaffordable like shelling out $2k at once."
The hesitations that do surface are specific, not about price: no Face ID, the smaller outer screen for people coming from Pro Max models, and the fact that only the USB-C Apple Pencil works ("As an Apple Pencil Pro owner," one commenter wrote, followed by an angry emoji).
r/iPhoneFold, the pre-launch community our first post covered, is running the most bullish thesis we found: a post titled "The iPhone Duo pre-order is going to be a BLOODBATH with how mild the iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders have been," reasoning that 18 Pro delivery dates were still available for day one six hours after pre-orders opened. Its own replies pushed back ("Hell no. Not in this day and age."). One member went further than anyone else: they 3D-printed a replica to test the size and concluded, "after actually holding the form factor in my hand, I think I'm sold on it."
On Wall Street, Evercore ISI's Amit Daryanani told CNBC the day after launch that Apple will sell as many iPhone Duos as it can make in the first six months. Neither the fan thesis nor the analyst one can be checked until pre-orders open October 16.
TikTok: "Samsung made it first… Apple made it BEST"
TikTok's reaction is less about price and more about who deserves credit. We pulled the most-liked comments on three of the highest-play Duo videos from a TikTok search.
| Video (plays) | Top comment | Likes |
|---|---|---|
| @brad hands-on (13.2M) | This looks more advanced and premium than Samsungs | 31,861 |
| @brad hands-on (13.2M) | Samsung made it first… apple made it BEST! | 31,063 |
| @brad hands-on (13.2M) | the effect when folding😮💨 | 29,122 |
| @brad hands-on (13.2M) | its so ugly 😭 | 21,166 |
| @carrine.low reading use case (8M) | Bro I want one but my kids are selfish and want to eat and have a place to live. | 53,279 |
| @carrine.low reading use case (8M) | a physical book does the same thing! | 27,528 |
| @carrine.low reading use case (8M) | I can't justify $2k | 11,761 |
| @brandon.butch hands-on (7M) | Dude so smart of them to make the fold screen matte because it helps hide the crease | 9,174 |
| @brandon.butch hands-on (7M) | I hate that I kinda like it | 6,534 |
The most-liked TikTok comment we pulled is a price joke (53,279 likes on a video about using the Duo as an e-reader), so TikTok isn't free of sticker shock. But on the highest-play of the three videos, the top comments are a Samsung-versus-Apple argument, and the pro-Apple side is winning it: "more advanced and premium than Samsungs" and "Samsung made it first… apple made it BEST!" each out-liked "its so ugly" by about 10,000. It's also the platform where people most openly admit they're torn: "I hate that I kinda like it."
X: Samsung won the day
X was where Samsung made its case, and it got more engagement than any Duo reaction we pulled elsewhere.

| @SamsungMobileUS: "Let us know when you're done reheating our leftovers 😉" | 219,353 | 13.88M |
| @SamsungMobileUS: "I'm so sorry, @DuoLingo. They copied us too #Solidarity" | 53,223 | 15.13M |
| @MKBHD: "iPhone Duo Impressions" video announcement | 10,225 | 830K |
| @SamsungMobileUS: "Was there range? No. Was it exciting? No. Did it happen? Yes. #ItsTimeToSwitch" | 8,849 | 714K |
"Reheating our leftovers" got more than 20 times the likes of the most-watched tech reviewer's own launch post on the same platform. The Duolingo post, about the name rather than the hardware, got the most views of anything on this list. It's worth setting that next to TikTok, though: Samsung won the joke on X, while TikTok commenters mostly concluded Apple had built the better-looking phone.
Outside the US, the price is the whole story
Apple's India store lists the iPhone Duo at ₹2,99,900 for 256GB, rising to ₹3,24,900 (512GB), ₹3,74,900 (1TB) and ₹4,49,900 (2TB). That's where the most negative news coverage in our GDELT pull clustered, including coverage of a YouTuber calling the Indian price "disgusting." Canadian commenters on r/apple flagged CAD $2,999 for the base model (901 upvotes, one of that thread's top price complaints).
News coverage overall stayed mildly positive. Across 1,475 articles mentioning "iPhone Duo" in GDELT's global news index over the seven days to September 14, 32.3% scored positive in tone, 53.4% neutral, and 14.3% negative.
| Article tone | Articles | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Positive | 476 | 32.3% |
| Neutral | 788 | 53.4% |
| Negative | 211 | 14.3% |
How we measured this
Reddit: reddit_comments (sort=top, with upvote metrics) on four general-audience launch threads (r/apple, r/iphone, r/technology, r/gadgets) plus the "who's getting it" thread in r/iPhoneDuo and the pre-order thread in r/iPhoneFold; reddit_subreddit_posts (top, past week) on r/iPhoneDuo and r/iPhoneFold. Sentiment coding covers top-level comments only, one label each (praises the product, price complaint, other complaint, impressive but won't buy, jokes/neutral, or off-topic), weighted by upvotes at pull time. Off-topic comments (3 of 46) were dropped. Replies were read for context but not coded. This is a manual read of the highest-voted comments, not a random sample of all 9,000+ comments in those threads.
TikTok: tiktok_search ("iPhone Duo", 30 results), then tiktok_comments on three high-play videos by their real video IDs. Both responses exceeded the single-call size limit and were extracted with jq.
X: x_profile_posts for @SamsungMobileUS and @MKBHD. There's no keyword search, so this shows the posts of accounts we already knew were involved, not X's overall sentiment.
Google Trends: google_trends_explore_interest_over_time, geo US, today 1-m, run twice: ["iphone ultra", "iphone fold", "iphone duo"] and ["iphone duo", "iphone 18 pro"]. Because "iphone duo" is the peak term in both requests, its values happen to be identical across the two charts, but each chart should still be read on its own scale. A first attempt with five keywords in one request was rate-limited (HTTP 429); two- and three-keyword requests went through. Running the Duo-versus-18-Pro comparison worldwide reverses the result, as covered above.
GDELT: gdelt_tonechart for the exact phrase "iPhone Duo," past week. This is a single snapshot. The tone-over-time, article-search, and date-bounded versions of the same query all returned upstream errors on every attempt across three research rounds, so we can't show whether news tone shifted between launch day and today.
Prices and specs: checked directly against apple.com's iPhone Duo spec sheet and US and India store pages, and against SamMobile's report of Samsung's official Galaxy Z Fold 8 US pricing ($1,899, 201g, IP48) for comparison. Pre-keynote expectations come from our September 9 post, r/iPhoneFold's September 7 price thread, and analyst estimates reported before the event.
One search that returned nothing useful: reddit_search for "iPhone Duo Face ID Touch ID" returned zero relevant posts in its top 15. The results were relationship-advice threads matching the word "face." The Touch ID debate above comes from reading the launch threads directly.

Frequently asked questions
How much does the iPhone Duo cost?
In the US, the iPhone Duo costs $1,999 (256GB), $2,199 (512GB), $2,599 (1TB) and $3,199 (2TB), per Apple's store page. In India it starts at ₹2,99,900 and tops out at ₹4,49,900. Before the September 9, 2026 keynote, most expectations put the starting price above $2,000: analyst estimates ranged from $1,999 to $2,499, and r/iPhoneFold's pre-event thread said most reports pointed to $2,099. The base price landed at the bottom of that range, while the $3,199 top tier came in higher than every leak we saw.
What do people think of the iPhone Duo?
It depends heavily on where you look. In four large general-audience Reddit launch threads (r/apple, r/iphone, r/technology, r/gadgets), 33.4% of the upvote weight in 43 hand-coded top-level comments praised the product and 24.2% was negative, with 82.4% of the negatives about price. The top r/apple comment was a shrug: people would love playing with it at an Apple Store, then never buy it. Buyer communities like r/iPhoneDuo talk mostly about colors, storage tiers and carrier financing, and TikTok's top comments argue that Apple's version looks more premium than Samsung's.
Is the iPhone Duo more popular than the iPhone 18 Pro?
In US Google searches, briefly. The iPhone Duo out-searched the iPhone 18 Pro on September 9, 10 and 11, 2026 (100 vs 62 at the September 10 peak), then the 18 Pro took the lead on September 12, the morning its pre-orders opened. Worldwide, the iPhone 18 Pro led on every day, including launch day, so the answer flips depending on the geography you pull.
What did Samsung say about the iPhone Duo?
Samsung Mobile US posted "Let us know when you're done reheating our leftovers" on X minutes after the reveal. At our September 14 pull it had 219,353 likes and 13.88M views. A second post, "I'm so sorry, @DuoLingo. They copied us too #Solidarity," had 53,223 likes and 15.13M views. On TikTok the argument went the other way: the top comments on a 13.2M-play hands-on video said Apple's foldable looked more premium, including "Samsung made it first… apple made it BEST!" (31,063 likes).
How was this iPhone Duo reaction data collected?
Live via Crawlora's Reddit, TikTok, X, Threads, Google Trends and GDELT endpoints on September 14, 2026, five days after the keynote, and compared against a pull of the same platforms 12 hours before it. Prices and specs were checked against Apple's spec sheet and US and India store pages. Reddit sentiment is a manual, upvote-weighted coding of top-level comments, not an automated score. The GDELT news-tone figure is a single seven-day snapshot, because the tone-over-time endpoint failed on every attempt.
