Tony Wang10 min readHow Old Are TikTok Search Results? 356 Product Searches, Measured
TikTok's #1 search result is typically 63 days old, yet 54% of product searches show a year-old video in the top 10. Data from 41,442 results.
TikTok's search results for product queries are mostly recent, but not uniformly so. The first result for a typical product search is about two months old. Half the searches we ran still put a video older than a year somewhere in the top 10, and a handful of searches are dominated by videos from 2024 and earlier. Which kind of search you are dealing with decides how long a product video keeps getting found.
The top of TikTok search is recent
The first result is typically a little over two months old, and the first ten results are not much older. Past the first 50 results, age rises fast:
| Position | Results | Median age | Under 30 days | Over 1 year | Over 2 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| #1 | 356 | 63 days | 33.1% | 14.3% | 4.8% |
| #2-3 | 712 | 73 days | 32.3% | 11.4% | 4.2% |
| #4-10 | 2,492 | 82 days | 29.9% | 13.2% | 5.1% |
| #11-20 | 3,560 | 80 days | 28.9% | 14.6% | 5.5% |
| #21-50 | 10,556 | 99 days | 25.1% | 18.3% | 7.1% |
| #51-100 | 15,159 | 195 days | 15.3% | 31.8% | 11.8% |
| #101 and deeper | 8,607 | 423 days | 3.6% | 57.0% | 23.8% |
The same pattern holds within each search, not just on average. For the 305 searches that returned at least two pages, the typical page-one result was 86 days old and the typical page-two result 255 days old. Page two was older on 90.8% of searches.
Fresh does not mean brand new. Only 11% of #1 results were under a week old, and 81% of top-10 results were posted in 2026. For a sense of scale, Ahrefs found in its May 2025 study of 1.3 million keywords that the average #1 page on Google is five years old. Ahrefs measures when its crawler first saw a page, and averages rather than medians, so the two figures are not directly comparable, but TikTok search is clearly working on a much shorter clock.
A year-old video still makes the top 10 on half of searches
A recent median hides a long tail near the top:
- 54% of searches had at least one top-10 result older than a year.
- 30% of searches had at least one top-10 result older than two years.
- 5% of searches had a typical top-10 result older than a year, and 19% older than six months.
- 17% of searches had a typical top-10 result under 30 days old.
Those searches sit at opposite ends:
| Search | Median top-10 age | Top 10 over 1 year | Top 10 under 30 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| clothing storage | 765 days | 6 | 0 |
| pour over coffee | 591 days | 6 | 0 |
| closet makeover | 562 days | 7 | 0 |
| coffee machine cleaning | 528 days | 6 | 0 |
| foam roller | 496 days | 6 | 0 |
| pantry organization | 484 days | 5 | 2 |
| closet shelf | 465 days | 6 | 1 |
| vacuum cleaner | 6 days | 0 | 9 |
| hair dryer | 5 days | 1 | 7 |
| kitchen gadgets | 5 days | 0 | 8 |
| meal planning apps | 2 days | 0 | 7 |
| noise cancelling earbuds | 1 day | 1 | 8 |
| gaming mousepad | 1 day | 0 | 9 |
Some of the fresh end is easy to explain. "Cat costume" (typically 7 days old) was searched in September, when Halloween videos are being posted. The "vacuum cleaner" top 10 was mostly vacuum ASMR clips, a niche whose creators post constantly. We did not find a simple rule for the old end: searches ending in broad words like "tools", "gadgets" or "apps" had the same typical top-10 age as more specific searches (75 vs 77 days).
By category, pet products, cleaning tools, hair styling tools and wireless earbuds lean newest; coffee equipment and clothing storage lean oldest:
| Category | Median age | Under 30 days | Over 1 year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pet products | 41 days | 40.3% | 10.0% |
| Cleaning tools | 51 days | 40.4% | 8.2% |
| Hair styling tools | 51 days | 37.7% | 5.3% |
| Wireless earbuds | 51 days | 39.3% | 11.7% |
| Gaming accessories | 60 days | 33.3% | 7.3% |
| Kitchen gadgets | 82 days | 29.2% | 14.8% |
| Productivity apps | 88 days | 31.7% | 14.3% |
| Home workout equipment | 89 days | 26.0% | 14.0% |
| Travel accessories | 93 days | 26.3% | 12.0% |
| Craft tools | 103 days | 23.9% | 11.4% |
| Clothing storage | 139 days | 20.0% | 25.3% |
| Coffee equipment | 146 days | 20.3% | 20.3% |
The videos change within days; the age profile does not
On September 14 we re-ran 23 of the searches, chosen from both the oldest and the newest ends. Only 3.8 of each original top 10 were still in the top 10 on average, so the specific videos rotate quickly. The age profile held: the typical top-10 age of a search on September 14 tracked the earlier snapshot closely (rank correlation 0.94). "Earbuds for small ears" went from 7 of 10 results over a year old to 9 of 10; "meal planning apps" stayed at none.
For a creator, that means a search's age profile is a fairly stable property of the search term, even though no single video owns a position for long.
Old videos in the top 10 have more plays and a lower like rate
Top-10 results older than a year had a median of 36,150 plays, against 9,491 for results under 30 days old. Their median like rate was lower: 1.96% of plays, against 3.51%.
| Video age | Results | Median plays | Median likes | Median comments | Median likes per play |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 30 days | 1,093 | 9,491 | 340 | 11 | 3.51% |
| 30 days to 1 year | 2,007 | 27,200 | 597 | 14 | 2.56% |
| Over 1 year | 460 | 36,150 | 563 | 15 | 1.96% |
This is a description, not a ranking model. Older videos have simply had more time to collect plays. TikTok's help center lists three kinds of factors for search results: your interactions (past searches and what you watch), content information (how well a video matches the search, its hashtags and sound), and device, language and location settings. For most users, it says, content information, "which may include how well the content matches the specific term entered, is generally weighted more heavily than others." Recency is not on the list. Searchers can sort results "by relevance, likes, or date posted"; this study measured the default relevance order.
What this means for creators and sellers
The practical question is which kind of search your product lives in. You can check that yourself: search the terms your buyers use, logged out, and note how old the top ten results are.
- Search the three to five terms buyers use for your product and write down how many top-10 results are older than a year. If several are, a good video can keep being found for months.
- For search terms with old top-10 results, keep answering comments on older videos. In our separate study of buyer questions, nearly half arrived more than 30 days after a video was posted.
- For search terms whose top 10 is days or weeks old (seasonal items, gadgets with frequent launches, niches that post daily), plan on posting regularly rather than counting on one video.
- Put the words people actually search in the caption. Positions change within days, so check again monthly rather than once.
What this can and cannot tell you
- One logged-out view. TikTok personalizes search. A logged-in user with a history, or a user in another country, may see different results.
- One snapshot. The searches ran September 10-13, 2026, with a partial re-check on September 14. Seasonal searches would look different in another month.
- Our search terms, not TikTok's traffic. The 356 phrases were chosen by us to cover 12 product categories. They are not weighted by how often people search them, and the results say nothing about search volume.
- Posting date, not ranking date. A video's age tells you when it was posted, not when it started ranking for a term.
- The Google comparison is rough. Ahrefs measured a different platform, with a different definition of age and an average instead of a median.
The search-result table behind this post is not part of our published comments dataset. The related TikTok Product Video Comments 2026 dataset covers the comments on the videos these searches returned.

Frequently asked questions
How old are TikTok search results?
Mostly recent. Across 356 product searches run in September 2026 (41,442 organic results), the #1 result was typically 63 days old and top-10 results 77 days old. A third of #1 results were under 30 days old, 14.3% were over a year old and 4.8% over two years. Results past position 100 were typically 423 days old.
Can an old TikTok video still rank in search?
Yes. On 54% of the product searches we ran, at least one top-10 result was more than a year old, and on 30% one was more than two years old. For searches like 'coffee machine cleaning', 'foam roller' and 'closet shelf', most top-10 results were over a year old.
Does TikTok search favor new videos?
Near the top, somewhat: on 91% of searches with two pages of results, page two was older than page one (typically 255 vs 86 days). But it depends heavily on the search term. Top-10 results for 'gaming mousepad' or 'vacuum cleaner' were typically under a week old, while 'clothing storage' was 765 days. TikTok's help center does not list recency among its search ranking factors; it says how well content matches the search term generally weighs most.
How quickly do TikTok search rankings change?
The individual videos change within days, the age profile much less. Re-running 23 searches a few days after the first snapshot kept only 3.8 of each top 10 on average, but each search's typical top-10 age stayed close to the earlier value (rank correlation 0.94).
