Tony Wang4 min readThe Sharpest Rank-Tier Gradient in This Whole Census Belongs to an Email Marketing Tool
Klaviyo shows a 16.8x tail-heavy skew - the most extreme single rank-tier gradient found anywhere in this census series.
Every 'premium enterprise tool vs. free/budget default' finding in this census has had a runner-up for sharpest gradient. This one doesn't — Klaviyo's skew is bigger than anything else measured across the entire series, and the domains behind it explain exactly why.

Marketo and Pardot are both enterprise B2B marketing-automation platforms — Marketo owned by Adobe, Pardot by Salesforce — sold to marketing organizations large enough to run multi-stage lead-scoring campaigns. Both concentrate toward the top of the web, in line with every other enterprise-tier finding in this series. Klaviyo runs the opposite direction at a scale nothing else in this census has matched: 16.8× more common in the 100K–1M tail than in the top 10,000. For comparison, the sharpest gradient found in any prior post in this series — GoDaddy's DNS number — was 6.25×. Klaviyo beats it by more than double.
The domains explain the number immediately
A spot-check of Klaviyo's deep-tail domains isn't ambiguous the way some of this census's other tail-heavy findings have been. It's a clean, uncomplicated list of small-to-mid direct-to-consumer retail brands: desertessence.com (natural cosmetics), piedmontese.com (specialty beef), pashley.co.uk (British bicycle maker), milkandhoneyspa.com, chambersstwines.com. No gambling-coded TLDs, no templated-looking domain patterns, no ambiguity to caveat — just real small ecommerce businesses. Klaviyo is built and marketed specifically for ecommerce email/SMS marketing, most commonly bolted onto a Shopify store, and this sample is exactly what "the default choice for a small online retailer" looks like when you go check.
The same axis, a sixth time
Email providers, certificate authorities, live chat, CAPTCHA vendors, DNS providers, and now marketing automation — six technology categories in this census, each with a completely different vendor ecosystem, and each sorting the same way: a tool built for large, well-resourced organizations concentrates toward the top of the web; a tool built as the practical default for a small business climbs toward the tail. Klaviyo's number is simply the sharpest version of a pattern this census has now confirmed six separate times.
Limits, stated plainly
ActiveCampaign's absolute counts are the smallest in this comparison (1 / 13 / 160 across the three bands, 174 total) — its direction agrees with Klaviyo's, but treat its exact ratio as a much weaker signal given the sample size. As always, correlation isn't causation: a small business doesn't stay small because it picked Klaviyo, and Klaviyo doesn't make a store bigger. The likely direction runs the other way — Klaviyo's own product and pricing are built specifically for the independent ecommerce segment, so its adoption simply follows wherever that segment already is.

Frequently asked questions
Which marketing-automation platform shows the sharpest correlation with website traffic rank?
Klaviyo, by a wide margin - and in the tail-heavy direction. In Crawlora's 1,000,000-domain tech-stack census, Klaviyo runs 0.07% of the top 10,000 Tranco-ranked sites, climbing to 1.18% of the 100K-1M tail - a 16.8x gradient, the most extreme single rank-tier gradient found anywhere across this census series, more than double the previous record (GoDaddy's DNS number at 6.25x).
Which companies use Klaviyo for marketing automation?
A spot-check of Klaviyo's deep-tail domains in this census found desertessence.com, piedmontese.com, pashley.co.uk, milkandhoneyspa.com, and chambersstwines.com - genuine small-to-mid direct-to-consumer retail brands. Klaviyo is built and marketed specifically for ecommerce email/SMS marketing, most commonly used alongside a Shopify store.
Do enterprise marketing-automation platforms skew toward high-traffic websites?
Yes. Marketo (Adobe-owned) runs 4.55x more often among the top 10,000 sites than the 100K-1M tail; Pardot (Salesforce-owned) shows the same direction at 2.03x - both enterprise B2B marketing-automation platforms sold to organizations large enough to run multi-stage lead-scoring campaigns.
Is there a general pattern in how enterprise vs. small-business technology choices distribute across the web?
Yes - this is the sixth technology category in this census series confirming the same shape, after email providers, certificate authorities, live chat, CAPTCHA vendors, and DNS providers. A tool built for large, well-resourced organizations concentrates toward the top of the web; a tool built as the practical default for a small business climbs toward the tail.
