Four email providers, one 1,000,000-site census, and a genuine four-way split: two climb toward the top of the web, one stays flat, and one climbs toward the tail. The shape isn't a Google-vs-Microsoft rivalry — it's a cleaner axis than that, and it only shows up once you stop comparing two providers and start comparing four.
Four providers, one axis — and it isn't the one you'd guess

Read it as two pairs, not four independent numbers. Google Workspace and Proton Mail — a mainstream premium suite and a privacy-focused one, about as different from each other as two email providers can be — both climb toward the top of the web at almost identical steepness (2.24× and 1.93×). Microsoft 365, the single most common provider in this entire census by a wide margin, doesn't climb anywhere; it's essentially flat across all three bands, if anything peaking in the middle rather than at either end. And Zoho Mail — usually pitched at small businesses as a cheaper alternative to both — runs in the opposite direction entirely, becoming more common the further down the rank list you go.
The thread connecting Workspace and Proton isn't "quality" or "modernity" in the abstract — it's that both require a site owner to actively opt away from whatever their infrastructure already bundles. Microsoft 365 ships with a huge share of the world's existing Windows and Office licenses; a site running it often isn't "choosing" email software so much as already having it. Workspace and Proton both cost a deliberate decision and often a deliberate migration. The sites with the resources and inclination to make that decision skew toward the top of the web — the same population that this census's parent rank-tier post already found disproportionately choosing modern frameworks and enterprise bot management over WordPress and free-tier CDN.
Proton Mail sites also run leaner overall
A second, independent signal lines up with the same read on Proton specifically. Sites carrying a Proton Mail signal average 7.71 detected technologies — meaningfully leaner than the 9.5–9.7 range shared by the other three providers. That's consistent with the privacy-conscious profile Proton's own product attracts: a site that has deliberately opted out of the default email bundle is, on average, also running less third-party analytics, tracking, and tooling generally. Microsoft 365, Zoho, and Google Workspace sites look nearly identical to each other on this specific measure — it's Proton that stands apart, not Workspace.
A trap worth naming: don't average rank across all matches
Before finalizing this piece, we checked a second, simpler-looking metric: the plain average Tranco rank across every domain carrying each provider's signal. That number is actively misleading here, and worth naming as a general caution, not just a footnote about this dataset.
Proton Mail's raw average rank (430,017) looks better than Microsoft 365's (457,543) — which, taken at face value, seems to contradict the rate table above. It doesn't; it's an artifact of scale. The 100K–1M tail contains roughly 90× as many domains as the top 10,000, so even a provider whose rate is far higher at the top (like Proton or Workspace) still has the overwhelming majority of its raw count sitting in the long tail, purely because the long tail is so much bigger. A naive average across all matches is dominated by wherever the bulk of the raw count happens to sit, not by which band the rate actually favors — exactly the scale problem that per-band rate tables exist to solve, and the same reason the parent census's rank-tier post always reports a percentage of each band rather than one dataset-wide figure.
Limits, stated plainly
Email-provider detection here comes from DNS/MX signals, not a homepage fingerprint, so it's a different kind of measurement than most of this census — more reliable in one sense (it works even on sites this census can't otherwise reach), less complete in another (it can't distinguish a genuinely dedicated corporate mailbox from a domain that just points MX somewhere and never uses it meaningfully). Proton Mail's counts are the smallest in this piece by a wide margin (29 / 217 / 1,362 across the three bands, 1,608 total) — read its percentages as directional, the same caution this census applies to any small-sample rank band elsewhere. And as with the rest of this census, this reflects detectable signals only, not a claim about true market share: a domain running its own mail server, or one whose provider this detector doesn't yet recognize, isn't counted as "no email provider" so much as "not detected here."
