PrestaShop shows a 19.5x tail-heavy skew - a new census-series record - and Salesforce Commerce Cloud explains its own flat number.
Every 'enterprise vs. small business' technology finding in this census has had a runner-up for sharpest gradient. E-commerce platforms don't just set a new record - they explain, in the same breath, why one enterprise platform in the same category breaks the pattern entirely.
A new record for tail-heaviness
| Platform | Top 10K | 10K-100K | 100K-1M |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salesforce Commerce Cloudroughly flat | 0.11% | 0.38% | 0.116% |
| Magento6.25x tail-heavy | 0.11% | 0.331% | 0.689% |
| BigCommerce12.7x tail-heavy | 0.01% | 0.038% | 0.127% |
| PrestaShop19.5x tail-heavy | 0.02% | 0.061% | 0.389% |
| OpenCartzero in top 10K | 0% | 0.024% | 0.227% |
| Platform | Top 10K | 10K–100K | 100K–1M | Direction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Salesforce Commerce Cloud | 0.11% | 0.38% | 0.12% | roughly flat |
| Magento | 0.11% | 0.33% | 0.69% | 6.25× tail-heavy |
| BigCommerce | 0.01% | 0.04% | 0.13% | 12.7× tail-heavy |
| PrestaShop | 0.02% | 0.06% | 0.39% | 19.5× tail-heavy |
| OpenCart | 0.00% | 0.02% | 0.23% | 0 detections in top 10K |
PrestaShop's 19.5× gradient is the sharpest single number found anywhere across this entire census series — sharper than Klaviyo's marketing-automation record (16.8×), NS1's DNS number (6.43×), or anything else measured so far. OpenCart's number is arguably even more extreme in a different sense: it doesn't just skew tail-heavy, it has exactly zero detections among the top 10,000 sites in the whole census.
The geography behind PrestaShop's number
PrestaShop isn't a US phenomenon wearing a French name — its non-.com footprint spreads across France, Poland, Spain, Italy, Romania, Greece, and Germany, a genuinely continental European small-business pattern. PrestaShop was built in France specifically as a free, self-hosted alternative to Shopify, and this is what its adoption footprint looks like when you actually check: a small online shop in almost any European market, not a US-specific niche.
Why Salesforce Commerce Cloud breaks the pattern
Every other platform in this category sorts by company size. Salesforce Commerce Cloud doesn't — and the reason isn't that it serves small and large companies equally. A spot-check of its top-10,000 sample turns up global consumer brands: patagonia.com, skechers.com, redcross.org, scholastic.com, belkin.com. A spot-check of its deep-tail sample turns up... also global consumer brands: footjoy.co.uk, lancome.in, viviennewestwood-tokyo.com, ethanallen.jo.
The pattern is the same caliber of company at every rank tier — just different country-specific storefronts of that same company. Lancôme's global presence is enormous, but lancome.in (its India-specific storefront) draws a smaller Indian audience than Lancôme's flagship domains draw globally, so it lands at a much deeper Tranco rank despite being run by exactly the kind of company that would license an enterprise commerce platform. SFCC is licensed almost exclusively to large global brands; its "flat" distribution reflects those brands' many regional storefronts landing at every rank tier, not SFCC actually reaching small businesses the way PrestaShop or Magento do.
Limits, stated plainly
BigCommerce's absolute counts are the smallest of the platforms with a clear direction here, so treat its exact ratio as directional rather than decimal-precise. OpenCart's "zero in the top 10,000" is a real, confirmed result — not a detector gap — but it's still a small-sample finding at the extreme, and shouldn't be read as literally impossible for a single high-traffic site to run OpenCart, only that none did in this specific 1,000,000-domain snapshot. As always, correlation isn't causation: a store doesn't stay small because it picked PrestaShop, and PrestaShop doesn't make a store bigger — smaller, resource-constrained retailers reach for the free, self-hosted option, and larger ones migrate to platforms with the budget for licensing fees and dedicated support.

Frequently asked questions
Which ecommerce platform shows the sharpest correlation with website traffic rank?
PrestaShop, by a wide margin. In Crawlora's 1,000,000-domain tech-stack census, PrestaShop runs 0.02% of the top 10,000 Tranco-ranked sites, climbing to 0.39% of the 100K-1M tail - a 19.5x gradient, the most extreme single rank-tier gradient found anywhere across this census series, beating the previous record (Klaviyo's marketing-automation number at 16.8x).
Where is PrestaShop most commonly used?
Across continental Europe, not the US. PrestaShop's TLD distribution in this census shows .fr (403 sites), .pl (251), .es (218), .it (194), .ro (64), .gr (51), and .de (48) - PrestaShop was built in France as a free, self-hosted alternative to Shopify, and its adoption footprint reflects that.
Why doesn't Salesforce Commerce Cloud follow the same rank-tier pattern as other ecommerce platforms?
Because it licenses almost exclusively to large global brands, whose individual country-specific storefronts land at every rank tier depending on that country's traffic, not the parent brand's size. A spot-check of Salesforce Commerce Cloud's deep-tail domains in this census still turned up recognizable global brands (footjoy.co.uk, lancome.in, viviennewestwood-tokyo.com, ethanallen.jo) rather than small businesses.
Does OpenCart appear on any high-traffic websites?
Not in this census - OpenCart shows zero detections among the top 10,000 Tranco-ranked sites, the most extreme absence found for any ecommerce platform measured.
