Tony Wang14 min readOne Spider-Man Movie, Five Internet Rooms: Measuring a Premiere's 24-Hour Fan-Out
Brand New Day's premiere split into 5 barely-overlapping subreddits in 24h. The search data says the casting-mystery angle beats the fashion angle, clearly.
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" had its world premiere on July 27, 2026, and by the time its review embargo lifted the next morning, the internet wasn't having one conversation about it — it was having five, in five rooms that barely read each other. A film-criticism thread argued over pacing. A fandom subreddit replayed the premiere's first reactions. A fashion subreddit posted red-carpet photos. A live-service game's subreddit announced an in-game costume. A livestream-clips subreddit caught a co-star accidentally spoiling a plot point on camera. We measured which of those rooms actually drives search volume, and the answer inverts what the loudest room would suggest.
Five rooms, one release, under 24 hours
The clearest evidence for the fan-out isn't a chart — it's the raw timeline of when each community picked the story up, scoped subreddit by subreddit rather than pulled as one undifferentiated search.
| Timestamp (UTC) | Subreddit | Post |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-07-28 02:52 | r/Fauxmoi | "Zendaya at the Los Angeles Premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day" — red-carpet fashion |
| 2026-07-28 05:33 | r/marvelstudios | "Spider-Man Brand New Day World Premiere — Blue Carpet Photos" |
| 2026-07-28 05:43 | r/LivestreamFail | "Valkyrae interviews Steve Lacy at the ... Red Carpet Premiere and he casually spoils Sadie Sink's role" |
| 2026-07-28 05:52 | r/marvelstudios | "First Reactions: Tom Holland 'Never Been Better' ... ditches Multiverse Tedium" |
| 2026-07-28 12:59 | r/movies | "'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' — Review Thread" (24 named-outlet critic scores compiled) |
| 2026-07-28 15:00 | r/marvelrivals | "[Brand New Day] Costumes for Hulk and Spider-Man! And AOU for Wanda and Bucky!" |
That spread is the study. A film-criticism community, a dedicated fandom hub, a celebrity-fashion subreddit, a livestream-clips community, and a live-service video game's own subreddit all treated the same 24 hours as their own separate news event — fashion, spoilers, reviews, and a cosmetics shop, four different reasons to post about one release. The r/LivestreamFail thread is worth reading in full: Twitch streamer Valkyrae interviewed musician Steve Lacy on the red carpet, prefaced the question with "without spoiling anything," and Lacy answered with the spoiler anyway — top comment: "Love how she even prefaced WITHOUT SPOILING ANYTHING dude is just floating by." None of that has anything to do with whether the movie is good.
Which query actually carries the volume
The radar report's working hypothesis was that the fashion angle (Zendaya's premiere look) and the casting-mystery angle (what role Sadie Sink is secretly playing) would both show up in search, and the interesting finding would be which one is bigger. It isn't close.
"Sadie sink jean grey" — the query built around a spoiler, the thing Steve Lacy blurted out on camera — has a real, dateable curve: flat near zero for most of the week, then rising to 21 on premiere day and holding in the mid-teens afterward, roughly a quarter the height of the film's own name. "Zendaya spiderman premiere" never develops a curve at all; on the same shared scale it tops out at 3, indistinguishable from noise. The premiere fashion moment generated a real, sizeable wave of Reddit posts, TikTok clips (see below) and Threads photos — but almost none of that traffic is organized around that specific search phrase. People reached the fashion content through the platforms themselves, not through search. The casting-mystery angle, by contrast, sent people to Google asking a direct question. That's the answer-first finding: not "which room is loudest," but "which room actually drives typed search intent," and those are different questions with different answers here.
Four review corpora, two of them still empty
Critics have weighed in; the wider audience hasn't caught up yet, and the different platforms show that at different speeds.
| Source | Critic score | Audience / user score | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rotten Tomatoes | 90% (140 reviews, Certified Fresh) | 0 verified ratings | Popcornmeter not yet populated |
| Metacritic | 70 / 100 (39 critics, "Generally favorable") | 0 user reviews | User-review tab empty at pull time |
| Letterboxd | — | 3.81 / 5 average (2,146 ratings, 1,229 written reviews) | Ratings post immediately; see histogram below |
| IMDb | — | not retrieved | imdb_title and imdb_title_reviews timed out on repeated attempts |
The gap between Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic's critic scores versus their audience scores isn't a sign of anything — it's simply how fast each platform's review-verification process runs relative to how fast a wide-release blockbuster's post-premiere critic embargo lifts. Letterboxd's model (any logged-in user can post a star rating instantly, no purchase verification) is why it already has a real sample while the other two don't.
The radar report specifically flagged the Letterboxd rating histogram as the chart that would distinguish "divisive but organic" from "review-bombed," and it reads as the former:
| Rating | Count | Share of 2,146 ratings |
|---|---|---|
| ★½ or below (0.5-1.5) | 27 | 1.3% |
| ★★ (2.0-2.5) | 118 | 5.5% |
| ★★★ (3.0-3.5) | 547 | 25.5% |
| ★★★★ (4.0-4.5) | 908 | 42.3% |
| ★★★★★ (5.0) | 546 | 25.4% |
Review-bombing on Letterboxd typically shows up as a spike at the very bottom of the scale, disproportionate to everything above it — a bimodal shape. This is the opposite: a single, smooth peak in the 4-star band, a real shoulder of 3-star ratings, and barely more than 1% of all ratings at the very bottom. That's the shape of a movie a wide range of people mostly liked to varying degrees, not the shape of a coordinated pile-on in either direction. Critic reaction spans a genuinely wide range even inside the positive-leaning aggregate — TIME's Stephanie Zacharek wrote that the film "shows some awareness that actors, and not excessive, soul-killing special effects, are what will keep drawing us to the movies," while IndieWire's David Ehrlich, in the same review cycle, graded it a C- and wrote that "this movie causes more problems than it cures." Both readings are represented in the aggregate; neither is the whole story on its own.
TikTok is the carpet, YouTube is the review, Reddit is everything at once
Three more platforms, three different framings of the same 24 hours. TikTok's search results for the premiere skew almost entirely toward red-carpet video — Deadline's clip of Zendaya, Tom Holland and Sadie Sink together on the carpet leads the set at 995,600 plays; a fan clip captioned "90% chance I go in the costume" pulled 285,500; a video of Michael B. Jordan's surprise carpet appearance pulled 324,500. None of the highest-performing TikToks in our pull are reviews of the film itself.
YouTube runs the opposite way. Jeremy Jahns' review posted 13 hours before our pull and already had 567,735 views; a GQ cast-interview video had 576,948; Chris Stuckmann's review had 207,593; a "Critics Left Stunned" reaction-roundup video from Looper had climbed to 4,536 in 9 hours. This is a meaningfully larger and faster-moving YouTube audience than we found for other stories in this series — the Mark Cuban employee-stock post found essentially no organic YouTube audience for its topic at all; here, a single creator review cracked half a million views in under a day.
Threads carries a bit of both, plus its own genre: spoiler-adjacent fan theorizing. One post from a self-described industry account ("Just walked out of the global premiere... this isn't setting up the next Spider-Man story. It's setting up the MCU's mutant era") reads as pure speculation dressed as insight, and drew real engagement (182 likes) on that basis alone.
The tie-in that's real but not measurable the way we expected
Marvel Rivals' own subreddit confirms new "Brand New Day"-themed cosmetics for Hulk and Spider-Man are coming July 31, timed to the wide release, plus a costume trailer teased for the same date. That is a real, dated Crawlora-shaped tie-in. What isn't measurable is the app-store review bump the radar report hoped to check: appstore_search for "Marvel Rivals" on the US App Store returns fan-made third-party apps — "Marvel Rivals Tier List," "Rivals Tracker" — but not the game itself. Marvel Rivals is a PC and console title with no standalone Apple App Store listing to pull reviews from. The tie-in is confirmed; the specific measurement we planned to run on it doesn't have anywhere to run.
Box office does not exist yet, and we're not going to estimate it
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" opens wide on July 31, 2026 — two days after this post was pulled — and real opening-weekend numbers won't land until August 2-3. boxofficemojo_title for the film's IMDb-linked title page currently returns only basic metadata (title, year, URL), no gross figures, because there aren't any yet. The most concrete number in circulation as of this pull is trade-press pre-sales reporting relayed secondhand in a Reddit box-office recap thread — "the trades report that the film has the year's biggest pre-sales by a wide margin" — which is a forward-looking claim about ticket pre-orders, not a completed gross, and we're citing it only as that, not as a result. Anyone reading this after August 3 should check Box Office Mojo directly for the real number rather than anything estimated here.
What one endpoint would have told you
Reddit alone tells you the fan-out happened but not which piece of it actually converts to search intent. Google Trends alone tells you the casting-mystery query wins but not why — you need the LivestreamFail leak and Reddit's own reaction to it to see the mechanism. Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic alone would make the film look like it has no measurable audience opinion yet; Letterboxd alone supplies exactly that, immediately, and its histogram is what actually answers the "divisive or bombed" question the aggregate scores can't. TikTok alone would make this look like a fashion story; YouTube alone would make it look like a straightforward review story. None of those readings is wrong, and none of them is complete without the others — that's the same argument this format has made about a Flock camera and a World Cup sponsor, applied here to a single movie's opening 24 hours.
This is release-day fan-out — a single title fragmenting across communities that barely overlap the moment it becomes real. It sits deliberately next to our Avengers: Doomsday / Dune pre-release anticipation post, which measured the buildup before a release exists to react to; this measures the fragmentation in the first 24 hours after it does.
How we measured this
Rotten Tomatoes: rottentomatoes_search to resolve the title, rottentomatoes_movie for the critic/audience score summary, rottentomatoes_movie_reviews (type=top-critics) for named quotes. The audience "Popcornmeter" score requires a verification threshold Rotten Tomatoes had not yet reached at pull time — banded_rating_count: "0 Verified Ratings" is the endpoint's own field, not a null we filled in.
Metacritic: metacritic_movie (slug spider-man-brand-new-day) for the 70 Metascore across 39 critics; metacritic_movie_user_reviews returned total: 0 — an empty, not missing, result.
Letterboxd: letterboxd_search (type=film), letterboxd_film, letterboxd_film_rating_histogram, and letterboxd_film_reviews (by activity, 10 results) for the quoted critic reactions from Letterboxd's own user base, including professional critics who cross-post there (David Ehrlich, David Sims).
IMDb: imdb_search, imdb_title and imdb_title_reviews each timed out on repeated attempts during this pull. We did not substitute a cached or estimated IMDb rating; the film's IMDb identity (tt22084616) was instead confirmed independently via its Metacritic cross-reference and used only to look up the Box Office Mojo title page.
Reddit: reddit_search run six separate times, each scoped to one subreddit (movies, marvelstudios, marvelrivals, Fauxmoi, LivestreamFail) with a topic-specific query, plus reddit_comments on the LivestreamFail spoiler post. Unscoped, cross-subreddit queries were not used for this post, consistent with this repo's standing note that broad reddit_search without a subreddit filter returns mostly-irrelevant recency-sorted noise.
YouTube: youtube_search, query "Spider-Man Brand New Day review reaction," type=video, sorted by view_count, upload_date=this_week.
TikTok: tiktok_search, keyword "Spider-Man Brand New Day premiere," 15 results. The raw response exceeded this session's inline output limit and was parsed from the saved file with a script rather than read directly — a real operational gotcha for anyone scripting this endpoint at scale.
Threads: threads_search, query "Spider-Man Brand New Day," 15 results, mixed original posts and cross-posted Instagram-style photo/video content.
Box Office Mojo: boxofficemojo_title, path /title/tt22084616/ — returns only basic title metadata pre-wide-release, no domestic or worldwide gross fields populated.
App Store: appstore_search, term "Marvel Rivals," 10 results, US storefront — the actual game does not appear; only third-party companion apps do.
Google Trends: google_trends_explore_interest_over_time, keywords ["spider-man brand new day", "zendaya spiderman premiere", "sadie sink jean grey"], geo=US, time_range=now 7-d, all three in a single call so values share one normalized 0-100 scale.
Scope note: critic and review-embargo quotes above are drawn from named outlets as republished in a moderator-compiled Reddit review-megathread and cross-checked against each outlet's own byline; we did not independently re-scrape every individual outlet's review page for this post.

Frequently asked questions
How did Spider-Man: Brand New Day's premiere spread across different online communities?
Into at least five barely-overlapping subreddits within about 24 hours of the July 27, 2026 world premiere: r/Fauxmoi covered Zendaya's red-carpet fashion, r/marvelstudios covered the premiere itself and early cast reactions, r/LivestreamFail caught a co-star accidentally spoiling Sadie Sink's role on a red-carpet livestream, r/movies ran a compiled critic review thread, and r/marvelrivals announced an in-game costume tie-in timed to the film's July 31 wide release. Each community treated the same 24 hours as its own distinct story.
Which generated more search interest: Zendaya's premiere look or the Sadie Sink casting mystery?
The casting mystery, decisively. On Google Trends' shared 0-100 scale, "sadie sink jean grey" rose from near zero to a real, dateable peak of 21 on premiere day and stayed elevated afterward. "Zendaya spiderman premiere" never developed a curve at all, topping out at 3 across the entire week — even though the premiere-fashion content generated substantial Reddit and TikTok activity. People reached the fashion content through the platforms themselves rather than by searching for it.
What do critics and audiences think of Spider-Man: Brand New Day?
Critics are positive with real range: Rotten Tomatoes shows 90% from 140 reviews (Certified Fresh) and Metacritic shows 70/100 from 39 critics ("generally favorable"), but quotes span from TIME's praise for the cast to IndieWire's C- grade. Audience data is uneven across platforms: Rotten Tomatoes' Popcornmeter and Metacritic's user-review tab were both still empty (0 ratings) at pull time, while Letterboxd already had 2,146 ratings averaging 3.81/5, with a smooth, non-bimodal histogram — about two-thirds of ratings in the 4-5 star range and just over 1% at the very bottom, the shape of an organically divisive reception rather than a review-bombing.
What is Spider-Man: Brand New Day's opening-weekend box office?
Not available yet, and this post does not estimate it. The film's wide release is July 31, 2026, and real opening-weekend numbers won't land until August 2-3. Box Office Mojo's title page carried no gross figures at pull time (July 29). Trade press pre-sales reporting relayed secondhand on Reddit claims the film has "the year's biggest pre-sales by a wide margin," but that is a forward-looking pre-order claim, not a completed gross.
Did the Marvel Rivals video game tie-in show up in app-store reviews?
The tie-in itself is real and confirmed — new Spider-Man and Hulk in-game costumes land July 31 per the game's own subreddit — but it isn't measurable through an App Store review bump, because Marvel Rivals is a PC and console title with no standalone Apple App Store listing. Searching the App Store for "Marvel Rivals" surfaces only unofficial third-party companion apps.
How was this data pulled?
Live via Crawlora's Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, Letterboxd, Reddit, YouTube, TikTok, Threads, Box Office Mojo, App Store and Google Trends endpoints on July 29, 2026. IMDb's title and review endpoints timed out on repeated attempts and were left out rather than estimated. Reddit was pulled as six separate subreddit-scoped searches rather than one broad query, since unscoped Reddit search returns mostly-irrelevant recency-sorted noise.
