Tony Wang10 min readThe Google Business Profile Review-Depth Gap: A Census of 4.9 Million Japan Listings
We analyzed 4.9M live Japan Google Business Profile listings: 98.1% have a review, but only 4.6% clear the local-pack reputation bar.
Crawlora's June census of Google Business Profiles found that 39.0% of live US listings have no website and only 8.4% clear the reputation bar research ties to local-pack rankings. Japan is the natural next market to check — it's the 4th-largest country in the same global dataset, and Japanese consumers have one of the most active public-review cultures anywhere, thanks in part to Google Maps and Tabelog both being deeply embedded in everyday restaurant- and shop-hunting. So we pulled the same cut, scoped to country=Japan: 4,912,075 live listings, checked for review presence, review depth, rating, and website coverage.
The headline isn't what we expected. Japan is reviewed far more thoroughly than the US — but that thoroughness doesn't translate into the kind of deep, ranking-grade review history research says matters most. Almost everyone gets a review. Almost no one accumulates enough of them.
Reviewed almost everywhere
Start with the simplest question: does a listing have a review at all?
98.1%. Compare that to the US, where the equivalent figure is 89.9% — a full 8 points lower:
Only 1.9% of Japan listings (92,832) have never been reviewed — versus 10.1% in the US. If you're building a prospecting list of "invisible" businesses by zero-review count alone, Japan is a much smaller pond than America.
The bar that actually matters, and the cliff right before it
Getting one review is a low bar. The bar local-SEO research ties to a real local-pack advantage is higher: 50-plus reviews at a 4.5-star-plus rating. Checked against the full population instead of a survey sample:
4.6%. That's the same order of magnitude as the US's 8.4% — meaning Japan's near-universal review coverage doesn't carry through into ranking-grade review depth. The gap between "has a review" (98.1%) and "has enough reviews to matter" (4.6%) is the real story:
Japan gets reviewed early — a new restaurant or salon picks up its first handful of reviews almost immediately, which tracks with how central Google Maps and Tabelog both are to everyday dining and shopping decisions here. What doesn't happen as often is the long accumulation into double- and triple-digit review counts that research ties to ranking. Nearly two-thirds of Japan listings never clear 10 reviews at all.
Website coverage: 43% have none, and it varies sharply by category
Website presence tells a similar "high floor, uneven depth" story. 2,800,367 of 4,912,075 Japan listings (57.0%) have a website; 2,111,708 (43.0%) have none — slightly worse than the US's 39.0% no-website rate from the June census.
Convenience stores lead by a wide margin — Lawson, 7-Eleven, and FamilyMart franchise pages cover nearly every location. More striking is where Japan diverges from the US: dentists (64.1%) and pharmacies (64.3%) both run well above their US equivalents (51.2% and 44.6%, per Crawlora's global category study on /local-business-index). Japan isn't uniformly "less online" — it's unevenly online, strong in regulated professional categories and weaker in food-service and trade categories.

A data-completeness note, stated plainly
While pulling this data we also checked phone-number coverage — and found it implausibly low (under 5% of listings). Rather than report that as a finding, we spot-checked live Google Maps pages for several of the "no phone" records and found real, published phone numbers our dataset had missed. That's a scraper capture gap for Japan specifically, not evidence that Japanese businesses skip listing a phone number — we've flagged it internally as a fix rather than publish a number we can't stand behind. If you're evaluating this dataset for phone-based enrichment in Japan today, treat that field as under-populated until this is resolved.
Why this is landing right now
Google spent 2026 tightening Google Business Profile verification globally — video verification is now the default path for most new or edited listings, aimed at cutting down fake and duplicate listings. Local-SEO research this year puts Google Business Profile signals as the single heaviest local-pack ranking factor, at roughly a third of total weight, and ties 50-plus reviews at 4.5-star-plus to a materially better shot — one widely cited figure puts it at 61% better — at landing in the map pack. Japan's data shows a market that clears the first bar (having a review) almost universally, but the second bar (having enough of them) at almost exactly the US rate. The businesses competing hardest for Japan's local search traffic are doing it with a review history that looks thinner than it should, given how reviewed the market is overall.
What this means
If you run local SEO or an agency practice in Japan: the addressable market isn't "businesses with zero reviews" — that's a small, already-shrinking segment here. It's the much larger group with a handful of reviews that never grew into a real review history, or no website at all (43.0% of the market). Crawlora's Google Maps API lets you filter by review count, rating, category, and prefecture to find exactly that segment instead of manually screenshotting Maps searches; see the web data layer for local lead generation for the workflow.
If you're building on this data directly: every number in this post came from Crawlora's public Google Maps dataset API — datasets_google_map_search and datasets_google_map_facets support the same min_review_count, min_rating, has_website, state, and category filters used here, scoped to country=Japan. Full endpoint docs are at /docs/google-map.
If you want the US half of this comparison: The Google Business Profile Reputation Gap is the companion census — 18.1 million US listings, the same reputation-bar methodology, and the source of every US figure cited in this post.
Methodology & data
Every figure in this post comes from live queries against Crawlora's google-map-businesses dataset via its public dataset API, filtered to country=Japan, pulled July 20, 2026. "Has a website" and "has ≥1 review" use the has_website and min_review_count filters directly; the "meets the bar" figure combines min_rating=4.5 and min_review_count=50, matching the methodology used in Crawlora's US reputation-gap census. Category-level website coverage is sampled across ten real small-business categories, filtered by their exact Japanese-language category values in the dataset (point-of-interest categories — shrines, temples, parks, ATMs — are excluded, matching the methodology on /local-business-index).
This is a point-in-time crawl snapshot, not a government census — it measures what's indexed in Crawlora's Google Maps dataset, not a verified count of every business in Japan. We publish aggregate rollups only; no individual business record from this dataset is exposed in this post, and the phone-number field is deliberately omitted from this post's claims pending a fix to a known capture gap (see above).
