We score a curated set of 49 major AI apps on two signals: their best US App Store + Google Play chart position (per store, refreshed daily) and their SimilarWeb monthly web visits. Each becomes a 0–100 score (chart from rank, web from log-scaled visits), and the leaderboard ranks by a 50/50 aggregate. An app strong on only one signal — a web-first model with no US mobile chart, or a charting app with little web — is ranked on the signal it has, not penalised for the other.
Each row also carries the app’s store rating, review count and Google Play installs, matched from our 4.1M-app dataset. The rating is review-count-weighted across the App Store + Google Play (so Android’s far larger review base dominates — e.g. Character.AI sits near 1.9★ from its Android backlash despite a higher iOS score), and installs are Google Play’s total since Apple doesn’t publish them. We attach metrics only on a confident developer match, so web-first apps with no official US app simply show “—” rather than a look-alike’s numbers.
Honest limits. Chart rank is a US-mobile popularity proxy and web visits are SimilarWeb estimates — neither is a monthly-active-users figure. The app set is curated, so a brand-new app can be missing until added. a16z’s Top 100 uses the same two signals (web + mobile) but is biannual and paid — this is free and daily. The aggregate leaderboard is open under CC BY 4.0.

Each app gets two scores: a mobile chart score (its best US App Store / Google Play position, shown per store) and a web score (its SimilarWeb monthly web visits, log-scaled). The aggregate rank is a 50/50 blend — and an app strong on just one signal (e.g. a web-first model with no US mobile chart) is ranked on that signal rather than penalised. It is a transparent, free, chart-and-traffic ranking — not a paid MAU estimate.
A curated set of the major consumer AI apps across assistants, image/video/voice, companions, search, coding and productivity — the same universe a16z covers. We add a daily chart position (per store) and SimilarWeb web traffic to each. Smaller or brand-new apps may be missing until added.
a16z's list uses the same two signals — web traffic (SimilarWeb) plus mobile (Sensor Tower) — but is published about twice a year on paid data, so it is weeks-to-months stale. This is the live, free, daily version: the same method, refreshed every day, with the underlying chart and traffic data queryable via API.
Daily — the mobile chart positions refresh every day (the 24h column diffs August 14, 2026), and web traffic is refreshed periodically. The App Store + Google Play chart data is queryable as JSON through Crawlora's Datasets API (pay-on-success); the aggregate leaderboard here is open under CC BY 4.0.
