Data study · August 25, 2026

Google Maps listings worldwide — snapshot August 25, 2026.
60.8%
of the 132,232,660 listings have no website at all (80,365,532) — a phone number is the only way to reach them.
75.4%
of Dutch businesses are online — the highest of 25 countries we track, nearly double the 39.2% global average.
18.3%
of South Koreanbusinesses show a website — below Vietnam and India despite being a wealthy economy. We spot-checked it live: half of the “no website” listings we sampled actually have a real site Google’s data just doesn’t show.
68.7→16.6%
coverage runs from banks at the top to grocery stores at the bottom — industry decides it.
Every listing, by website presence
Website coverage on the same kind of Google Maps listing varies enormously by market: from 75.4% in the Netherlands down to 4.9% in China (Google Business Profile isn't meaningfully supported there). It doesn't track wealth cleanly — South Korea (18.3%), a wealthy economy, sits below Vietnam (25.3%) and India (19.4%). We verified this live rather than guess: half of a 6-listing spot-check turned out to have a real website Google's data doesn't show, and the rest lean on Naver's blog/booking ecosystem and Instagram instead of an owned domain — this dataset likely undercounts Korea's true web presence more than it does elsewhere. And Vietnam itself is not the outlier an earlier, narrower comparison suggested: 6 of these 25 countries score lower. Top 8 and bottom 8 shown; all 25 are in the reference table below.

59.3% of the 19,887,475 US listings have a website, but the states span 29.7 points: 75.7% in Utah down to 46% in West Virginia. The geography is coherent — the Mountain West and Pacific lead, Appalachia and the Deep South trail — with one loud exception. New York, wealthy and dense, sits at 50.8%, 4th from the bottom between Maine and Arkansas. That is the same shape as South Korea above: most plausibly a platform-substitution or listing-mix effect (very large volumes of small and duplicate listings in New York City), not evidence that New York businesses lack websites — a hypothesis we flag, not a cause we assert. Every state is shown as a rate, never a raw count: listing counts reflect where the crawl went, a within-state share does not.

From banks (68.7%) down to grocery stores (16.6%), website coverage tracks how much a business depends on online discovery and how regulated the trade is. Hands-on local trades sit lowest; finance, insurance and licensed professional-services categories sit highest.
Having a "website" in the data rarely means an independent site. 169,025 listings point to a Facebook page; 130,509 carry a Yext chain-listing fingerprint; and the top domains are postal locators and franchise corporate sites shared across thousands of branches. These counts are from an earlier, smaller-scale pass and haven't been recomputed at the current 132M scale — see methodology.
Most common “websites” — by listings sharing them
What a “website” field actually is
Independent site on its own domain
The real local web — a small business with its own homepage. The long tail, in the millions.
Chain / franchise branch
One corporate locator domain shared across thousands of branches (locations.ups.com/store/123). One brand, not one site each.
Social page as a website
A Facebook or Instagram page stands in for a site — the single most common “website” in the data (169k+ businesses).
Free site builder
A templated sites.google.com / wixsite.com / weebly.com page — crawlable, but not a real domain of their own.
No website at all
61% of listings — a phone number is the only contact channel. Web enrichment can't touch them.
Website presence is one signal. Reviews and ratings are another — and a companion study on the US slice of this same dataset finds most listings are missing that signal too.
10.1%
of US Google Business Profile listings have never been reviewed — not low-rated, zero reviews.
8.4%
combine a 4.5★+ rating with 50+ reviews — the bar local-SEO research ties to a materially better local-pack ranking.

We aggregated Crawlora’s Google Maps businesses dataset — a point-in-time snapshot of 132,232,660 listings probed up to August 25, 2026, up from 76M in July 2026 and 12.4M at this study’s original 2026-06 pass. A business “has a website” if its Google Maps listing carries a non-empty website field; coverage is the share of listings that do. Country and category come from the listing itself.
Scope. The headline 60.8% and the by-category breakdown are computed across the full, worldwide dataset. The country comparison covers the 25 largest markets by listing volume, not every country the dataset touches — a wider field than the six-market comparison this study originally shipped with. Places, not just shops. Google Maps also lists non-business points of interest (postal codes, bus stops, parks, ATMs); the headline 60.8% covers all listings, while the by-category view is filtered to real business categories. Counts for shared domains are from a registrable-domain analysis run on an earlier, smaller-scale pass (2026-06-10) and are approximate — they have not been recomputed at the current scale, and the public dataset API can’t substitute for that analysis (a full-text search for a domain like “facebook.com” mostly matches businesses with that string literally in their name or address, not businesses whose website field actually points there). Figures are a lower bound on “independent web presence”: a listed “website” is often a Facebook page, a chain locator, or a free site builder.
The US state map. Pulled September 6, 2026as one website-status aggregate per state — 50 states plus DC, from an explicit list with a completeness check, because the dataset’s facet endpoint returns at most 50 values and would otherwise silently drop one state. No size threshold, sampling, or top-N cut is applied anywhere in that tier. The map colours a rate, never a raw count: how many listings a state has reflects how deeply it was crawled, while the share with a website is computed within whatever was crawled and is robust to that. State totals are a US-only cut and are not comparable to the worldwide headline above one-for-one, since they were pulled on a different date from a still-growing index.
Coverage isn’t even.“Worldwide” describes where this dataset draws from, not that every country has been crawled to the same depth. Crawl coverage is uneven and is being actively expanded country by country; some countries have been swept in depth, others only lightly, and a handful have only thin, pre-crawl residue. Nigeria and Greece are two documented examples of countries whose listing counts in this dataset are currently far below their real business populations, purely because systematic crawling reached them only recently. A country’s absence from the 25-country table above, or a small total for it elsewhere, reflects how far the crawl has reached that country — not the size of its real business population.
Country-name data quality. The underlying country field mixes full names with a handful of raw ISO-3166-1 country codes for some smaller markets — we normalized and excluded ambiguous rows rather than publish a duplicated or mislabeled country.
The aggregate rollups behind this page are open under CC BY 4.0. We publish aggregates only — never individual business records.

Crawlora (2026). State of Local Business on the Web 2026. 60.8% of 132,232,660 Google Maps listings worldwide have no website. https://crawlora.net/local-business-index.
Across 132,232,660 Google Maps business listings worldwide, 60.8% have no website at all (80,365,532 businesses) — a phone number is their only listed contact channel. Among businesses that do list a "website", many point to a Facebook page or a chain corporate domain rather than an independent site.
Grocery stores and farms are least likely, both around 16.6% online, followed by bakeries (25.6%) and auto repair shops (26%). At the other end, 68.7% of banks, 64.5% of insurance agencies and 60.6% of chiropractors are online.
The Netherlands leads the 25 countries we track at 75.4%, ahead of Canada (66.6%), Australia and Germany (both in the mid-60s), France and the US (both 59.3%). China (4.9%) is the lowest we track — Google Business Profile isn't meaningfully supported there. Coverage doesn't track wealth cleanly: South Korea (18.3%), a wealthy, highly-digitized economy, sits below both Vietnam (25.3%) and India (19.4%).
Utah (75.7%), Arizona (74.3%), Nevada (72.5%), Oregon (70.9%), Idaho (69.7%) lead the 50 states and DC; West Virginia (46%), Mississippi (49.4%), Arkansas (50.6%), New York (50.8%), Maine (51.2%) trail. Nationally 59.3% of 19,887,475 US Google Maps listings have a website, so the 29.7-point spread between Utah and West Virginia is wide. The pattern is regional — Mountain West and Pacific states high, Appalachia and the Deep South low — with New York the outlier: 50.8%, 4th from the bottom, despite being one of the wealthiest and densest states.
No — an earlier, narrower comparison against wealthy markets made Vietnam's 25.3% look like a stark outlier, but against a real 25-country field it is unremarkable: 6 other countries we track score lower (China, Pakistan, Indonesia, the Philippines, South Korea and India). We checked this wasn't a crawl artifact — Vietnam's listings are dominated by genuine small-business categories (restaurants, cafes, salons, tailors), not location-less or point-of-interest entries.
South Korea (18.3%) is the one result in this study that doesn't fit a simple wealth-predicts-coverage story, so we verified it live rather than leave it as a guess. We spot-checked 6 Google Maps listings flagged as having no website: half turned out to have a real, independent website with its own domain that Google's data simply doesn't show — a Korea-specific gap in Google Business Profile completeness, not evidence the business lacks a site. The other half genuinely have no independent website, but are thriving, well-reviewed businesses whose real digital home is Naver (blog coverage, in-app reservations) or Instagram rather than an owned domain, and in one case an active Kakao official channel. Read together, South Korea's true share of businesses with a real web presence is very likely higher than 18.3% — Google's own data just doesn't capture it as reliably here as it does elsewhere.
For 169,025 businesses in our original domain-level analysis, a Facebook page is the only "website" they list — it is the single most common entry in the website field. It works as a presence, but it isn't a domain they own, can't be crawled like a homepage, and leaves them dependent on the platform. Counting social pages, chain locators and free site builders, the share of businesses on a real independent domain is well below the headline 39.2%.
It is a point-in-time snapshot of 132,232,660 Google Maps business listings worldwide, probed up to August 25, 2026, drawn from Crawlora's Google Maps businesses dataset. Website presence and category coverage are computed across the full global dataset; the country comparison covers the 25 largest markets by listing volume, not every country the dataset touches. The Facebook/Yext/shared-domain figures are retained from an earlier, smaller-scale analysis pass (2026-06-10) and haven't been recomputed at the current scale — the public dataset API can't isolate a website-domain match from a name/address text match, so that recomputation needs the same direct access as the original pass. The aggregate rollups are published as an open CSV under CC BY 4.0.
No — it usually means the underlying crawl hasn't reached that country as thoroughly yet, not that businesses there are scarce. Crawl coverage is uneven and still being expanded country by country; some countries have been swept in depth, others only lightly. Nigeria and Greece are two documented examples: both currently show far fewer Google Maps listings in this dataset than their real business populations, because systematic crawling only reached them recently. A country missing from the 25-country table above, or showing an unexpectedly small total elsewhere, should be read as "crawl coverage is still catching up here" rather than as a fact about the country's economy.
60.8% of these businesses are phone-only and many of the rest hide behind a Facebook page or a chain locator. Crawlora’s Google Maps and Contact APIs find the independent sites among them and pull verified business emails — so you build a lead list of real, reachable local businesses, not chain switchboards.
