That count is deliberately broad: it includes 45,498 operating companies and 3,906 investment entities alongside the long tail of one-time Form D issuers, individual Section 16 (Form 3/4/5) filers and deregistered shells, which carry a profile but no financial statements. If you only want operating companies, filter entity_type=operating or set a revenue band.
Entirely from SEC EDGAR public data — the same submissions, company facts (XBRL) and full/daily index files the SEC publishes for free. Each record is built from a company's own filings: profile and filing history from its submissions feed, normalized income / balance-sheet / cash-flow history from its XBRL company-facts, and insider-transaction rollups from its Form 3/4/5 ownership filings. No private, paywalled or behind-login data is included; the value is that it is cleaned, normalized and queryable as one index instead of one filer at a time.
Financials come from XBRL company-facts, which only exist for filers that report them — chiefly operating companies. So the income / balance / cash-flow history and the revenue, net-income and total-assets fields are populated for roughly the operating-company subset (45,498 entities; 10,836 currently carry a reported annual revenue figure), not the full 976,927-filer registry. The long tail is profile-and-filings only. Revenue is stored in each filing's native reporting currency, un-normalized, so sort and compare within a currency rather than across the whole set.
A separate index of 1,771,846 position rows — every holding line reported by 9,446 institutional investment managers on their latest 13F-HR filing. It supports both directions: filter by manager_cik to pull a manager's full reported portfolio (what does this fund own), or by issuer_name / cusip to see which managers reported a position in a given security (who holds this stock). Because SEC does not publish an authoritative CUSIP-to-company map, the issuer-side lookup is best-effort name matching, not a guaranteed join.
