Do people download the AI apps they Google? This dataset joins Google Trends search demand, the live US App Store charts, and SimilarWeb web traffic for 40 major AI apps (July 1, 2026). The answer is mostly no — only ChatGPT tops both.
40 apps
15 charting · 39 with SimilarWeb
1 of 40
AI apps — ChatGPT — sits in the top tier of both search demand and App Store rank. Everywhere else, the two pull apart.
15 charting
of the 40 AI apps appear in the US top-100; several rank far above their search demand (Gemini #1, DeepSeek #4), carried by distribution.
Web = search
Ranked by SimilarWeb visits, the apps line up with search demand (ChatGPT, Gemini, Canva, Claude…), not the store chart — the App Store rank is the outlier.
| Search demand ↓ / store rank → | Top 5 | Top 25 | Top 50 | Top 100 | Off top-100 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dominant | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| High | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| Moderate | 2 | 2 | 0 | 1 | 2 |
| Low | 0 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 5 |
| Minimal | 1 | 2 | 0 | 1 | 18 |
Every app with the exact Google Trends term measured. Search demand is a coarse tier because ChatGPT dwarfs the field; web visits are SimilarWeb monthly estimates.

| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| app | Display name of the AI app. |
| trends_term | Exact Google Trends query measured (hand-picked to disambiguate brand names, e.g. "Claude AI", "Google Gemini"). |
| search_tier | Coarse search-demand tier: Dominant > High > Moderate > Low > Minimal. |
| trends_interest_chatgpt100 | Trailing-12-month mean Google Trends interest, anchor-normalized so ChatGPT = 100 (directional). |
| best_app_store_rank | Best current US chart rank across iOS/Play, Top Free + Grossing (null = off the top-100). |
| ios_rank / android_rank | Best current per-store chart rank. |
| chart_score | 101 − best_app_store_rank (higher = better standing; null if off-chart). |
| ratings_count | Combined iOS + Play ratings count (install proxy), where matched. |
| sw_monthly_visits | SimilarWeb estimated monthly web visits (absolute; blank = below SimilarWeb's floor). |
| sw_global_rank | SimilarWeb global site rank. |
| divergence | downloads_not_search | search_not_downloads | aligned (tier gap between store standing and search demand). |
We snapshotted the US App Store charts (iOS + Google Play, Top Free + Grossing) via the Crawlora App Store charts dataset, measured trailing-12-month Google search interest per app via the Google Trends API, and pulled SimilarWeb monthly web visits as an independent cross-check. Because ChatGPT out-searches the field ~30–1000×, search demand is anchor-normalized to ChatGPT = 100 and reported as coarse tiers; every per-app search term is disclosed in the table. Cross-sectional US snapshot, not causal.

One row per major AI app (40 apps, US, snapshot 2026-07-01) joining three independent popularity signals: Google Trends search-demand tier and ChatGPT-normalized interest, best US App Store chart rank (iOS + Google Play), and SimilarWeb monthly web visits. Aggregate and derived — no raw records or personal data. Licensed CC BY 4.0 as CSV and JSON.
Mostly no. Across these 40 AI apps the rank–search correlation is about 0.1 — statistically indistinguishable from no relationship. Only ChatGPT tops both. A third signal, SimilarWeb web traffic, agrees with search demand rather than the store, so the App Store chart is the outlier — driven by distribution (bundling, promotion, news) more than search demand.
ChatGPT out-searches every other AI app by roughly 30 to 1000 times, so Google Trends (which rescales each comparison 0–100 against the largest term) compresses the rest into noise. We anchor to ChatGPT = 100 and bucket the result into coarse tiers — Dominant, High, Moderate, Low, Minimal — and treat the correlation as directional only.
