Every number on this page describes the titles Box Office Mojo itself charts, not the full history of theatrical releases. Titles enter the index two ways: the lifetime worldwide top-1000 chart, and every title reachable by walking Box Office Mojo's per-year worldwide and domestic charts. Year charts do not reach back indefinitely, so the index skews toward recent decades — the bar chart below, showing the top chart-years by title count, is the clearest evidence of that skew. It is the right shape for gross, franchise and market-level box-office research; it is the wrong shape for claims about film-release volume in years outside this window, such as before 2012.
Because the index includes every title reachable from a year chart, not only hits, it is not top-heavy: the modal band is under $50M lifetime worldwide, and only 13.9% of titles with a recorded gross clear that line. At the very top, Avatar (2009) tops the whole index at $2.92B.
1,321 titles carry no gross_band at all because no lifetime worldwide gross is recorded for them yet — they sit outside every band, not inside the smallest one.

The years_active facet — every chart year a title appears in, including re-releases — skews heavily toward the last fifteen years, peaking at 1,057 title-year tags in 2018. That is not a claim that recent films outnumber classics at the box office; it is Box Office Mojo's own year charts not reaching back indefinitely, so older years are systematically thinner in the index than newer ones.
A record is only useful if the fields you need are populated. Release-group and market-level detail is available for nearly every title, but the lifetime-top-1000 and billion-dollar flags are — by design — rare: they mark the very top of a much larger chart index, not typical coverage gaps.
franchise_names, brand_names and genre_names are optional Box Office Mojo taxonomy tags applied to a minority of titles — the tables below return only the top 12 tagged buckets, not every value in the index. genre_names is also multi-valued per title, so its counts are tag occurrences, not a title count.

The dataset holds 21,993 charted theatrical titles, deduplicated to one record per title_id (Box Office Mojo's own IMDb-style tt… id). 21,976 of those (99.9%) carry hydrated release-group and market-level detail; the rest are index/listing records built from the chart pages alone.
