Snapshot August 20, 2026 — discovered from PitchBook's public sitemap.
1,191,437
PitchBook company profiles, one record per company id — the primary and largest dataset here , searchable by industry, financing status, HQ and founding year without a PitchBook login.
1.6M
records across all five entity types combined — companies, funds, investors, advisors and limited partners , each its own dataset id sharing the same public-sitemap crawl and extraction pipeline.
54%
of companies already carry an Acquired/Merged or Out of Business status — this is PitchBook's full historical company registry, not a live board of active startups.
17.3%
of companies show at least one recorded investor — PitchBook gates full investor and deal lists behind its paid subscription, so this is a lower bound, not a census of who's backing whom.
Companies by PitchBook lifecycle status. Acquired/Merged and Private lead by a wide margin, ahead of the Out of Business and Public tiers — the dataset spans a company's whole recorded life, from active fundraising through exit or shutdown.
By PitchBook primary industry. Business/Productivity Software leads at 80,454 — software, commercial services and real estate/property dominate the top of the list, reflecting where PitchBook's own coverage and sitemap depth concentrate.
Two structured fields, checked against the whole 1,191,437-company registry: how many disclose a founding year, and how many carry at least one recorded investor tie.
Sorted by recorded investor_count — a lower bound on real backing, since PitchBook only exposes the full investor list to subscribers. Even so, the top of the list reads like a who's-who of recent venture activity.

Fund profiles crawled the same way as companies — strategy, status, managing firm, size and vintage year, with a preview of limited partners and benchmark peer funds. Its own dataset id, its own endpoint family, same sitemap-discovery pipeline.

Funds by strategy
fund_size is a display string straight off the profile (e.g. "$3.13B"), not a parseable number, and full limited-partner lists sit behind PitchBook's subscription — filter and sort by fund_strategy, fund_status or vintage_year rather than by size.
Investor (fund manager/firm) profiles — overview, contact/HQ, and a preview of investments, exits and co-investors. Sortable by recorded portfolio size, so the accelerator and incubator programs with the widest reach surface immediately.

Investors by type
The investors with the highest recorded portfolio_count are almost entirely accelerators and incubators — Plug and Play Tech Center, Y Combinator and Techstars lead — because programs that fund dozens of companies a year rack up more disclosed positions than any single VC fund. portfolio_count and exits_count are each investor's own disclosed rollup, not a guaranteed-complete deal history.
Advisor (service provider) profiles — investment banks, lenders, law firms, accounting firms and financing advisory firms — overview, contact/HQ, and a preview of serviced companies/deals, co-lenders and subsidiaries.

Advisors by service type
service_type is close to fully populated across the dataset; year_founded and the serviced-companies/serviced-deals preview counts are thinner, since PitchBook surfaces those only on more complete profiles.
Limited partner (institutional investor) profiles — pension funds, endowments, foundations and insurance companies — overview, contact, and a preview of fund commitments.
34,588
limited partners indexed
82.8%

21.1%

Limited partners by institution type
Some limited-partner profiles carry no FAQ section at all — PitchBook only generates one for profiles with enough underlying content, so an empty faqs list here is normal, not a sign of missing or blocked data.
Every query authenticates with an x-api-key header and reads the stored index — no live scraping, billed pay on success. Each of the five datasets exposes the same three operations:

Screen companies by industry, financing status or geography; profile a fund's strategy and vintage; map an investor's portfolio; find the right advisor or limited partner — five entity types, one REST API. Diligence, sourcing, market mapping or research: clean JSON, pay on success.
1,191,437 company profiles as of the August 20, 2026 snapshot, one record per PitchBook company id. It's the primary and largest of the five PitchBook datasets on this page — the other four (funds, investors, advisors, limited partners) add 135,811, 120,863, 91,564 and 34,588 more records respectively.
All five — companies, funds, investors, advisors and limited partners — are PitchBook profile types discovered from the same public sitemap crawl, and they cross-reference each other constantly (a company has investors, a fund has limited partners, an investor has a portfolio). Splitting them into five near-identical dataset pages would mostly duplicate the same honesty and methodology framing five times and clutter the dataset catalog; one PitchBook-branded page with a dedicated section per entity type covers the same ground more usefully.
Every record here is discovered from PitchBook's own public sitemap and read from the free profile pages PitchBook publishes for companies, funds, investors, advisors and limited partners — the same pages any visitor can open without a PitchBook login or subscription. None of it comes from PitchBook's paid Platform product, an API key, or any credentialed access. PitchBook gates most numeric figures — fund performance and IRR, full investor and limited-partner lists, most financials — behind that subscription; those simply come through as empty cells here rather than being estimated or fabricated.
What's public is included: company overview, industry, financing status and ownership status; fund strategy, status and vintage year; investor type and disclosed portfolio/exits counts; advisor service type; limited-partner institution type. What PitchBook keeps behind its subscription — fund performance and IRR, complete investor and limited-partner lists, most financial statements — is not fabricated to fill the gap; those fields are simply absent on the source profile and absent here too.
135,811 fund profiles — strategy (Venture, Buyout, Real Estate, Debt and more), status (Closed, Open, Liquidated, Fully Invested…), the managing firm, a size figure and vintage year, plus a preview of the fund's limited partners and benchmark peer funds. 80.6% of funds carry a recorded vintage year. fund_size is a display string off the profile, not a normalized number — don't sort by it directly.
120,863 investor (fund manager/firm) profiles — overview, contact/HQ, and a preview of investments, exits and co-investors, classified by investor_type (Angel, Venture Capital, PE/Buyout, Accelerator/Incubator and more). portfolio_count and exits_count are each investor's own disclosed rollup; 60.8% show a portfolio count and 63.7% show an exits count. Sorting by portfolio_count surfaces mostly accelerators and incubators, which by design back far more companies than a typical VC fund.
91,564 advisor profiles — the service-provider side of a deal: investment banks, lenders, law firms, accounting firms, management consultants and financing advisory firms. Each carries a service_type classification, contact/HQ, and a preview of serviced companies/deals, co-lenders and subsidiaries where PitchBook discloses them.
34,588 limited-partner profiles — the institutional-capital side: pension funds, endowments, foundations, insurance companies and similar institution_type classifications — with overview, contact and a preview of fund commitments. PitchBook only auto-generates an FAQ block for profiles with enough underlying content, so some limited-partner records carry an empty faqs list. That's expected for a thinner institutional profile, not a sign of a blocked or broken crawl.
Yes. Each of the five datasets — pitchbook-companies, pitchbook-funds, pitchbook-investors, pitchbook-advisors, pitchbook-limited-partners — exposes the same three REST operations (search, items/{id}, facets) and the matching MCP tools (e.g. datasets_pitchbook_companies_search, datasets_pitchbook_funds_item, datasets_pitchbook_investors_facets, and so on for advisors and limited partners). All fifteen endpoints read the stored index and are billed pay-on-success.
